Chapter eighteen

Dane

I know my girl finished working at six this morning, so I’ve spent the day with my parents, catching them up on everything that’s been happening back in New York with Aunt Faith and the restaurant.

“You could always stay here tonight,” Mom says as I stand and look for where I put the keys to the hire car.

“Thank you, but I want to spend it with Penelope.”

“Do you think she’ll be expecting you?”

“Considering no one knew I was arriving, I doubt it.”

“It must be difficult for you both,” Mom says. I haven’t really spoken to her about Penelope’s and my fractured relationship. “The distance thing can’t be easy.”

For me it’s a no-brainer, but I think Penelope is really struggling with it. “It’s a teething process. We’ll get there.”

Mom walks over and hugs me. “I miss you and Scarlett. Next time, can you come back for more than a day?”

“I’ll try, but...work.”

“I know, I know. You’re a hot-shot accountant now.”

I snort with laughter. “I’m an accountant, not a lawyer. There’s nothing too flashy about that.”

She pulls back, and leaves her hands on my shoulders. “I’m so proud of you and Scarlett. Both of my kids have really matured into caring and successful young adults. I’m honored to call myself your mom.”

“Thank you, Mom.” I give her another quick hug, and pull away to head over to Penelope’s. “Love you.”

“Love you, son.”

I look for Dad who’s nowhere to be seen. “Do you know where Dad is?” I ask as we walk toward the front door.

“I think he said he was going to wash the car.” Once we’re outside, we both see Dad on the front lawn, washing Mom’s car. “There we go.” Mom juts her chin toward Dad. “Have a good night, and next time, stay for longer than a few hours.” She folds her arms together and leans against the house under the front porch.

“Fly in, and fly out, Mom. I’ve got to be back to work tomorrow.” I give her another kiss, then turn and head down the steps toward Dad. Dad turns the hose off, and walks over to the pathway where I’m standing. “I’m going, Dad.”

He hugs me carefully, making sure he doesn’t wet me from his soaking t-shirt. “Good to see you, son. Give your sister a kiss for me.”

“I will. Bye, Dad.”

“Love you,” he says, turns and continues washing the car. Dad’s a man of very few words. It’s okay, it’s just the way he is. Not very emotional or talkative, but I know he loves us.

“Love you too.” I turn to Mom and wave before I walk over to the rental, get in and start toward Penelope’s parents’ house. Thankfully, she doesn’t live too far from my parents. Mulberry Point is a town where everyone knows everyone. Penelope is a firefighter and respected in the community.

I pull up in front of her parents’ house, and walk up to the front door. I knock and wait. “I’ll get it,” I hear my girl call from inside.
