Chapter 12

Danny Buller looked too sleek a man to have such an aggressive name. His trousers always had dead straight creases, his jackets were always buttoned, and his shirts were always stiffly starched and very white.

Judging by the way his jacket covered his body, no one could possibly have guessed that he wore a government-issue holster which held a government-issue pistol.

Although Blue Bonecci may not have remembered it, Danny Buller had grown up in the same neighbourhood, shared the same gang fights, and even the same girlfriends. Their paths had divided after leaving school.

Blue had chosen the wild side of life and a way of making a living that knew no laws and no morals.

Danny, dominated by a mother brought up as a Fitzpatrick in County Tipperary, had been bullied into graduating and, after a period at college, had ended up an officer in military intelligence. From there it had been a short skip and a jump to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

But Danny had never forgotten Blue Bonecci, the good looking wop, loved by the girls and favoured by women who were old enough to know better.

At this very moment, Blue was in the car ahead of him.

'Don't lose him,' Danny growled.

John Benn, his driver, responded by stabbing his foot on the gas pedal. The car lurched into a higher speed.

'Do you think he's seen us?' John asked.

'Who cares!' Danny said, eyes narrowed and fixed like searchlights on the car in front. God, but he wanted to nail Bonecci. Any way, any which way at all. Vengeance was in his soul, yet he regretted it affecting his personality. 'Sorry, John. I didn't mean to be grouchy. It's just that me and this guy have got a score to settle. He probably does know we're following him. A guy in his position expects it.'

The car in front turned into an ill-lit side street.

'Pull in behind him,' Danny ordered.

Dark as the street was, Danny ground his teeth as he recognised the film star looks of the boy who'd been a class mate and had lived just a block or so away.

Like him, he'd been just this side of poverty, but unlike him, he had chosen a crooked path to follow.

Dishonesty wasn't the reason for Danny's hatred of the Italian mobster. There were plenty of them, and although he disliked them, they did not fire Danny with the same flame of revenge. Blue was someone he truly hated, because Blue was a man who used women and discarded them as if they were old shoes.

Danny's sister, Patsy, had been no more than sixteen when she had fallen for Blue.

Her hair was a fiery Irish red, and her eyes were green. Creamy skin and an infectious laugh had set her apart, above all the girls in school and all those in the neighbourhood.

She could have had the pick of any football jock, any high-brow swotter, any clever dick earmarked for Harvard or Yale. But she didn't fall for any of those. She fell for Blue.
