I fall asleep in Jack’s arms, but before dawn breaks over the New York City, he’s gone again. Waking to an empty bed is disappointing. With the night we shared, I’d have loved to have woken in Jack’s arms, cuddled and safe. But, it’s not all bad. He’s always out there protecting me.

When I finally get out of bed, I find a note on my nightstand.

In case of emergencies, call me. Love, Jack, it reads.

His name and number are printed on the back in gold leaf; Jack Hamlin, Senior Associate at Dwight Enterprises. I get a chuckle out of the card, considering the nature of Jack’s real business.

I go about my morning routine, and for the first time in the better part of a week, I finally feel ready to go back to work. As much as I despise the loathsome scum that comes into The Summerset Inn, I’ve missed the place. There isn’t much to do at home, apart from watching daytime TV and sitting around bored. Work always finds a way to keep things exciting.

I call Jamie and ask if there’s a shift for me. He replies that The Summerset’s been understaffed since I went off, and he’s happy to have me back. It’s music to my ears.

I guess getting my release through Jack’s touch helped me relieve stress because my first shift back goes surprisingly smoothly. I come in an hour and a half earlier than my usual shift, getting acquainted again. Really, I can use the extra money after taking six days off.

When it’s time for my actual shift to start, Sam enters The Summerset, and takes his seat in the middle booth chair, nursing two beers through the night. I want to go up to him and say hi, but considering the last time I walked up to him, I decide it’s not a good idea. No one knows about our relationship, and it’s probably best to keep it that way.

“Bail’s.” Arthur’s the first to notice I’m back. He gives me a warm smile, wrapping a hand around my waist in an awkward, sibling-esque hug. I’m more interested in seeing Margot and finding out how her night away went.

“It’s good to be back,” I say, returning the hug.

“You probably chose the worst night to start up again,” Arthur teases.

“Sure, coming back on Friday night probably isn’t wise, but when motivation calls, you don’t say no.” We chuckle, even though it’s not funny.

“Well, I best get behind the bar,” Arthur never was a man of many words. The Summerset is a job to him. We share a few kind words here and there, but he’s made it pretty clear he’s not here to make friends.

“I’ve got tables,” I say.

It’s a short, pointless conversation and it makes me happier than it should have.

I get through most of my shift, and Margot doesn’t arrive. On a short break to catch my breath, I check my phone. She sent me a text saying she won’t be at work tonight, but she wishes me luck.
