I stand stone-still watching the car drive off. A minute ago I was on the floor, about to become some bastard’s involuntary playmate, and now I can’t find my feet.

I’d recognize Jack’s deep, whiskey-soaked, crooner voice anywhere. He was the one to tell me things are going to be okay as I lay, dying, on The Cattlemen’s floor. And he was right, things turned out fine – if you can call mental trauma and constantly fearing for my life okay. I lived to fight another day. Better than being dead at eighteen, right?

I shouldn’t be as surprised as I am when I see the stranger from the bar in Jack’s car. Or the other guy that was with him on the night it happened. So Jack’s the one following me? Does that make any of this easier? For my first month out of the hospital, Jack was the only person on my mind, but, I didn’t even get a goddamned postcard wishing me well.

Now he’s on my street? Appearing out of nowhere and saving me from danger? The swirling mess of emotions building inside isn’t helping me to figure this out. I’m scared, angry, sad, and so unimaginably happy, too. How happiness filters into the mix is beyond me. Worried and pissed; those are the emotions I’m meant to be feeling.

I regain my footing and start the short distance back home. I’d run if my body allowed me to, but, my leg hurts from tumbling to the ground. My thoughts briefly return to the man I ran into and what Jack and his crew are going to do to him. They tossed him in the trunk before driving off.

I force the thoughts out of my head. He asked for it, I tell myself. It’s the only way to stay sane with what just happened.

The apartment my foster folks got is a dream house in the middle of the city. There are tenants above us, but, the high ceilings keep their noise at bay. I’m glad it’s the bottom unit because my legs couldn’t walk more than the three stairs to the front door.

I bolt the front door shut after I get in, and peer through the peephole to see if anyone else is waiting outside. Of course, the street is empty. Jack and his cronies are long gone with their victim in the trunk.

I guess my heart wants another glimpse of Jack and my mind’s playing it off as paranoia. I must be going insane. This isn’t normal behavior. But, who’s to say what’s normal and what isn’t with everything I’ve been through?

This whole situation is a mess. We’re in uncharted territory with no definitive answer to what’s right and wrong.

A couple of hours go by before the next set of headlights break through the curtains. I rush to them in some misguided giddy delight, peeking through to see who’s outside. My heart sinks into my belly as I see Margot getting out of a car, instead of Jack or one of his men.
