Time does funny things when you canât breathe.
The gray-skinned giant had a grip like a bear. His fingers completely encircled my throat, cutting off my air and threatening to crush my windpipe. The seconds stretched, and conversation inside the cafeteria abruptly ceased as the other diner patrons took note of what was happening.
âBannonnnnn,â the giant moaned.
âGhahh,â I replied, as dark spots began to appear in my peripheral vision. A quick glance down revealed my duffel bag sitting atop the plastic chair. Grimfang was inside. If I could somehow get hold of itâ¦.
I extended my leg out and reached toward the bagâs strap with one pointed toe. Unfortunately, the hulking brute chose that moment to move. He turned and stomped his way through the restaurant, casually knocking aside the tables and diners in his path. Somewhere, a woman screamed, and sounds of scooting chairs filled the air, as people scrambled to get clear.
I tried to struggle, prying at the giantâs fingers, but they were as unyielding as iron. We passed by the salad buffet and something struck the gray-skinned giant in the back of the head. Something small. It detonated on impact, leaking foamy brown liquid down the back of his neck. The giant grunted in surprise and turned, completing the movement just in time to catch a second projectile squarely on the nose. The can of Dr. Pepper exploded with a wet hiss, soaking the giantâs face and leaking down into his eyes.
An angry cry burst up from the hulking bruteâs throat, and he released his grip. I dropped to the floor and scrambled away, drawing up into a kneeling position. Peering up, I caught sight of Rhett. She gripped a third soda in her hand, her arm drawn back in a firing position. Unfortunately, I wasnât the only one to notice.
The giantâs brows drew down, and his lips spread apart to let out a low growl. The chains encircling his wrists clinked as he started forward, angrily crunching the already downed tables beneath his feet. Rhett swallowed and took a step back.
An image suddenly flashed in my mind. Rhett, broken and bleeding, trapped within the giantâs grip. Fear sliced deep in my chest, and I threw myself forward, ramming my shoulder into the back of the giantâs leg. I hit just behind the knee, and the hulking brute let out a surprised grunt as his leg buckled and collapsed beneath him. We hit the floor, and I rolled hard, twisting to my left an instant before he came down. Two rotations brought me up to my feet, and a handful of steps carried me over to Rhett. I grabbed my duffel bag in one hand and wrapped my other arm around her midsection.
âGo!â I screamed and shoved her toward the door.
Behind us, the gray-skinned giant bellowed as he rose. Covered in yellow rice and chili sauce, he lumbered up to his feet, wiping at his eyes with thick, bloated fingers as we raced out the doors. Outside, it quickly became evident that the commotion inside hadnât gone unnoticed.
