“Do you have a death wish or something?” I hissed at Benjamin, forcing him into an empty training room. “Why the fuck would you ever act like that with a prince of fucking Hell? They could’ve killed you!”

“I wish they did. I wish they would’ve killed me,” Benjamin snapped. “It would’ve been better than spending eternity with you.”

“First of all, asshole, you’re not spending eternity with me,” I snapped back. “I just said that so that I could save your ass.”

“Save my ass?”

“Yeah! Save your ass.” I groaned. “But you didn’t have to make it so hard. I really thought they were going to kill you, Benjie.”

“Why would you care?” Benjamin shrugged. “Aren’t you working with them now? Haven’t you stepped into your own as the Princess of Hell?”

“No,” I replied, letting out a loud sigh. “But I’ll be honest with you, okay? I thought about it. I thought about what it might be like to fight for Hell, to fight for my family…but I realized that my family and those guys aren’t the same. My dad would never pull something like that. Yeah, he might be Satan, but he’s not—”

“A sociopath?” Benjamin suggested.

“Yeah, that. My mom isn’t one either. I know history has given them a shitty reputation, but they’d never hurt someone who didn’t deserve it.” I shook my head. “But the Princes of Hell? They’ll hurt anyone, just so they won’t bore themselves to death. It’s fucking terrifying.”

“And what about Charlie?” Benjamin asked.

“What about Charlie?”

“He’s working for Ashmedai, is he not?” He continued. “Or has he retired from his role as an agent of Hell?”

“You and I both know that he never had a choice,” I replied. “Please. Don’t blame Charlie for—”

“For what? For taking away my father?” Benjamin cut me off, as he kept speaking. “For putting a hole in my mother’s heart that she’ll never be able to fill again? For ruining my life? For putting me up for a seat on the Council as some twisted in memoriam move?”

“I understand that you’re upset, but Benjie, it wasn’t Charlie’s fault,” I explained. “He doesn’t even remember what happened with your dad.”

“Good. That makes one of us,” Benjamin scoffed. “If only we were all so lucky to possess Charlie’s talent for losing memories.”

“Is that what you really want?” I asked. “You want Charlie to feel bad about something he had no control over?”

“No,” Benjamin murmured. “No, that’s not what I want.”

“Then what do you want, Benjie?”

“I want things to go back to how they were.” Benjamin’s voice was quiet, as he looked at me. “I want to go back to believing that I could find an angel on the street, and it wouldn’t change my life, that it wouldn’t come back around to haunt me someday.”

“I am not the reason your dad is dead,” I said, as tears started to fill my eyes. “You can’t just blame me for something that I didn’t do. If you want to be angry about it, fine, but you can’t—”

“I am not angry.
