I have missed my family dearly. Having them at my new house with Venus makes me so incredibly happy, but I can tell that something is off. I can sense it in the way my grandmother sits even stiffer than she usually does, the way her smile refuses to show itself.
She is displeased, incredibly so. It reminds me of when she would babysit me and the way sheâd look at me when I did something she didnât like, and it makes me feel sad. I rarely see her, especially ever since I became an idol because she doesnât approve of it. This morning, once everyone was up and enjoying breakfast, I can see that sheâs even more agitated than before.
âGrandma?â I ask her. âCan I talk to you?â
She doesnât respond. For a moment, I think that sheâs going to deny me, but she stands from where sheâs been sitting on the couch and follows me outside into the garden.
âIsnât this a nice home?â I ask her, trying to ease into the conversation.
âItâs very flashy,â she says, seeming uninterested.
âOh,â I say before starting again. âItâs got a lot of green space. I know how much you enjoy being outside.â
âI suppose,â she says, her hands tight in front of her.
Seeing that sheâs not going to make this easy, I decide to dive right in.
âAre you all right, Grandmother? I can tell that youâre unhappy.â
âDid you really have to choose her?â she asks, the subtle malice in her words surprising.
âWho? Venus?â I ask, stunned.
âIf that is the girlâs name,â she says, not bothering to hide her distaste.
âI didnât choose anything,â I say, not quite sure how to respond. âI met her by chance, and then the bond formed. Itâs fate.â
She does not seem impressed.
âSurely, things donât have to be this way,â she says. âEven if it is fate, as you say, there must be some other answer. Did you really have to marry her?â
âNeither of us had a choice about that,â I say, trying not to sound defensive. âBut even if we didnât get married when we did, it would have happened not much later. I love her.â
âYouâre too young to know what love is, Taein,â she says to me, nearly pleading, âI donât want you throwing your life away.â
âWhy donât you like her? Iâm sure if you gave her a chanceââ
âI am not interested in giving her a chance,â she says, her words firm, âI will not accept her into our family.â
âButââ
âI am done speaking about it, Taein,â she says, already moving to head back indoors. âLetâs just get this Chuseok over with, all right?â
âBut you love Chuseok,â I say, struggling to process any of this conversation.
âI love it when itâs with my family, not when itâs tainted by outsiders,â she says, the words falling from her lips like poison.
I am left alone outdoors. Iâm not sure what to do.
Is my grandmother the reason Venus disappeared last night? Did she say something to her?
Wanting to go check on my wife immediately, I
