Synchronicity

Carl Jung popularized the term “synchronicity,” indicating the subtle interaction between individual will and universal law (or God’s will or the movement of the cosmos, depending on your perspective). A spiritual practice can help a person become more attuned to synchronicity—to read the signs, to see the way the wind is blowing, to feel the direction in which life wants to go, and then use his or her creativity and intelligence to help it happen in the best possible manner. Once we develop a knack for noticing and welcoming synchronicity, life becomes more interesting and rewarding. We start to meet the right people at the right time to lead us to the next station in life.

It’s easy to embrace synchronicity when things are going well, but there are times when events seem to conspire against us. Some days, the computer system decides to crash at the very moment I am about to complete an important document, and then I get stuck in a huge traffic jam when I’m in a hurry to get somewhere. Three or four things all seem to conspire against me, preventing me from doing whatever I think I need to do. At such frustrating moments, all kinds of interpretations can pop into my mind, including the self-defeating attitude that life is against me.

Life is never against me or anyone else. In these situations, the most effective strategy is to pause for a few minutes and reflect on the balance between the apparent antagonism of life that is disrupting our plans and how much or how urgently we want to achieve our goals. Maybe, upon reflection, it’s to our advantage that the goals are delayed a little. Maybe we’re trying to push events faster than they can go out of fear that things won’t turn out the way we want. Take a break. Step back. Reflect. Might there be a reason that life is intervening at this moment?

At the same time, paying attention to synchronicity doesn’t mean we should give up on our efforts and goals. It doesn’t mean that every time something goes wrong we are on the wrong path. We shouldn’t let the negative or challenging influences in life justify procrastination or allow us to abandon our goals in favor of temporary pleasures and distractions.

A spiritually healthy life is lived in delicate balance between these two extremes: will and letting go, goal orientation and spontaneous impulse, personal desire and the cosmic plan. We need to learn how to walk a middle path, to be sensitive to the natural flow of events while not throwing away our own determined idea of where we want to go.

Some helpful tools are available, if you desire to become more attuned to synchronicity. These tools include the Chinese masterpiece The I Ching, or Book of Changes, astrology, numerology, and tarot cards. They can all help you learn to read the signs and signals of life, but don’t take these tools too seriously; otherwise, you may wind up relying on them to make simple, ordinary decisions.
