DCI COLLINS TOOK HIS time reading the preliminary report from the raid on Will Henman’s house, not that it was very long. When he was done he closed the folder and set it down on his desk. It was obvious from his body-language that he wasn’t happy; the last thing he needed was another murder - four murders in the space of a week was unprecedented, and that, combined with the racial tensions caused by the Bhaskar murders and the irate phone call that had been directed to him just a short while ago, left him concerned not only for his future promotion prospects but for his current position.

“He’s been dead for a week?” Collins asked finally.

Nathan shrugged uncertainly. “Doc Jones made a brief examination of the body, from which he concluded he’s been dead for a week, but we won’t get anything close to a definite time of death until the P.M.’s been done. Even then it’s unlikely we’ll get the kind of accuracy we’d like. We’ll know how many days ago he died, but we probably won’t have an hour of death, which’ll make it tough when it comes to nailing down any suspects.”

His experience with murders was limited, but better than Nathan’s, so Collins was not surprised by the possibility that the time of death would be more of a time-frame. “It’s definitely murder, though?”

“Definitely murder. The initial examination indicates he was stabbed five times, that, of course, will be confirmed by the P.M., which might also give us some idea of the type of weapon used. I don’t imagine we’re going to learn anything we didn’t already know from Terry Fielding’s P.M., though, since at first glance it seems clear the same knife was used in both murders.”

“That would explain how this guy’s blood ended up at Fielding’s murder scene,” Collins remarked. “Motive?”

Nathan could only shrug unhappily. “No idea at the moment. We haven’t found a motive for Fielding’s murder yet, and beyond the fact that they were both killed by the same guy, as the blood makes clear, we don’t have any idea what might link them. I think when we figure out what the motive for one of the murders is, we’ll have the answer to both.”

Collins looked dubious at that, and Nathan was tempted to tell him that he believed he knew Will Henman from somewhere - he had got the same sense of recognition from the photographs of the suspect as he had when he attended the scene of the Bhaskar murders and met Vikram Bhaskar - and that he suspected there was a connection between all four of the recent murders. He didn’t think Collins wanted to hear that until he had proof to back up his suspicions, however.

“Are you sure there’s a connection?” Collins wanted to know. “Isn’t it possible that Fielding and Henman have no links, and were killed during robberies? Wasn’t some jewellery and a few other things stolen from the Fielding place?”

“Yes. Paulina reported the theft yesterday
