Chapter 14

Safely back at the police station, de Silva consoled himself that at least he didn’t have to face Prasanna’s wife, Kuveni, and tell her that her husband had been beaten up in Mackenzie Road; to say nothing of what Jane would have said if their escapade had gone awry. As it was, they had returned in one piece, even if they’d come back with the wrong man.

He turned his attention to the problem of the drunk sleeping it off in the cell. Prasanna had done enough today. It wouldn’t be fair to leave him to guard the man all night. Nadar’s little boy’s birthday celebrations must be over by now.

‘Go and find Constable Nadar,’ he said to Prasanna. ‘Tell him he’s to report back for duty. When you’ve done that, you may go home.’

‘Thank you, sir.’ Prasanna hurried away.

While he waited for Nadar to arrive, de Silva went to check on the drunk. Curled up fast asleep like a small child, he looked harmless. In the morning, when he had sobered up, he would give him a stern warning not to behave in such a foolish fashion again.

He wondered what Jack Harvey was doing. Maybe he was back at the Harveys’ bungalow by now. His brow furrowed at the thought of Elizabeth Harvey and Peter Hancock. They had both led him down the wrong path. Was that an honest mistake or had they tried to mislead him deliberately? If the latter, he had let them dupe him into wasting valuable time. He scratched his head. Where to go from here?

Unless any of their servants were prepared to talk freely, he had no idea how he was going to find out whether the alibis Mark Brodie and David Llewellyn had given each other were genuine. Unfortunately, most servants didn’t want to jeopardise their jobs, so they feigned ignorance, or it might be genuine. He had a similar problem with Tom Duncan. At the moment, he had only his wife’s evidence for the time he left home.

He wrote down Jack’s name in his notebook and underlined it. The evidence against him was more compelling. Why lie about the time he left the Blue Cat in Kandy if he had nothing to hide?
