Martinez’s Heartache

Visions of Peterson’s corpse haunt my mind like a plague. I can’t seem to get the vision of his lifeless body and his wife holding my piece out of my head. I’ve already popped four pills, and they aren’t working. I need to head on over to the liquor store. It’s still early in the afternoon, so I should be good by the time I have to pick Gabby up. In fact, since it’s Friday, I think I’ll see if Granny wants to keep her for the weekend.

Yeah, that’s a great idea. I’ll blame it on work and throw the ol’ lady a couple of dollars for her kindness, even though she won’t accept it.

“Hey, Granny. How’s it going?” I question when she answers on the first ring.

“I can’t complain, Marty. How are you doing?”

“Pretty good. I wanted to know if you’d mind keeping Gabby for the weekend. I’ve been asked to do a double.”

“Sure thing, Marty. I will square a few things away so we can have a girls’ weekend. Don’t work too hard, Marty, and make sure you eat and keep yourself hydrated.”

“Yes, ma’am, and thank you.”

That was easy, I think, closing my eyes to thank God. Oh, shit! I almost hit that woman. What the hell am I doing closing my eyes while driving? Is that Cola? It is. Damn, I almost ran over the love of my life—who I hate!

“Cola, you’re going to get yourself killed if you don’t get out of the damn road!” I yell out the window, which falls on deaf ears, because she keeps walking down the middle of the street.

“Leave me be. I’m better off dead.”

“You’re talking nonsense. Get in this car,” I demand, exiting the car to assist her in getting in.

“Why do you care whether I live or die? I have been nothing but dishonest and unfaithful to you.”

“That’s no reason to wish death on you.”

“I’m so sorry, papi. I miss you . . . I miss us.”

“Believe it or not, I’m sick without you in my life.”

I lean in closer to kiss her, but she pushes me back before asking, “What in God’s name has you blasted out of your mind? Whatever it is, I want some!”

“I had a little to drink earlier, that’s all. I was on my way to replenish. Would you like to take a ride with me?”

“I could use the escape, yes. But I know how you look with alcohol, and I can’t trace that look, so cough it up. Whatever it is that has you dazed, I need some so I can meet you wherever you are right now mentally.”

“Look, I hurt myself on the job, so I have some pain meds to ease the pain. I’m not supposed to drink with them, but sometimes I do. It’s nothing.”

“Well, I want some of nothing too. I have a lot of pain that needs to be eased as well.”

“You want to talk about it?”

“I don’t want to kill your buzz talking about me finding out my father is Latavia’s father, the same man who sexually abused her.
