BAD BOY

BOTH MEN KNEW THERE was no value in going directly to The Apricot Camp. But the area surrounding where the American drone attack had occurred was the destination Nasir was aiming for. It shocked him that with all the attention the matter had attracted there was not one referenced interview with a local witness, particularly a neighbor.

Nasir was behind the wheel and several times as he checked the road behind him, he noticed a cab. It would at times trail by quite some distance and then close the space between them. One time when he pulled off the road to stretch his legs, he saw the vehicle turn off on what looked like a farm road. But then moments later when he resumed driving, the cab would again appear.

Finally, he informed Mirza. He confirmed Nasir’s impression. Waiting for a moment until the trailing car was at a good distance behind them, he instructed Nasir to pull over. He jumped out of the car and told Nasir he’d take over driving. After the switch, Mirza drove only a couple miles before the other car was again closing in on them.

Mirza then did the unexpected. He spun the car around one hundred eighty degrees and began to accelerate full speed directly at the other car. Nasir, describing himself later as “scared crapless,” was befuddled by his partner’s recklessness. As he zeroed in on the intruding car, at the last second in the game of chicken, Mirza sharply skidded his car to the right, the other car veering off the opposite direction before sliding into deep mud that brought his car to an abrupt halt.

Mirza had already swung open his door and was racing toward the driver of the cab. When he reached the car, the startled man did nothing to disguise his fright. The more aggressive Mirza dragged him out from behind the wheel.

“You’re following us, you flat-breasted termite,” he screeched at him. Holding the cab driver by the lapel of his coat he pulled him upright. “What is this about and I don’t want any of your vulgar lies.”

“Sir,” the startled cabbie pled. “I’m to pick up Mr. Sosooli. I’m early,” his voice trembled.

“You’re a lying mouse,” Mirza yelled still louder and without regard for the man’s obvious terror. “Where is your phone? Tell me who called you to do this?”

The man said nothing, still anguishing from the unexpected behavior by Mirza.

“Turn that car around and if I see you again I’ll beat you senseless,” Mirza threatened.

Mirza ran back over to where Nasir was standing witnessing the hostile exchange. They went back into the car and took off, Mirza still driving. Nasir looked back as the cab driver’s vehicle remained stuck off to the side of the road.

“He’s no threat to us now. We’ll wave to the little cretin when we pass him on the way back—he’ll still be dug into the mud,” Mirza chortled as if the encounter was a scene in a comedy.

“What if he wasn’t after us?”

“Don’t be foolish, boss.
