“YOUR JAMBALAYA SUCKS,” Kyle said to Murphy as they commandeered the kitchen of Bridget Sullivan.

Lost in thoughts of what later tonight would bring, Murphy barely heard Kyle. He was sautéing the onions, celery, green pepper and garlic that were required for one of his favorite dishes, focusing on how this was literally a rehearsal for the food he’d be cooking Tam.

If not for family responsibilities, he’d be at her place by now, burying himself in her. Every tick of the clock over the stove emphasized that.

But he’d promised his mom dinner tonight because she’d guilted him into it. She was still on her kick about him and Kyle not talking enough.

Kyle was in charge of the gumbo and fried okra, whipping up the roux at the stove while commenting on every move Murphy made while he took care of the jambalaya and bread pudding. Par for the course. In the kitchen, as with many other things, they were always pacing each other.

When Murphy didn’t respond to Kyle’s prodding, his cousin tried another tack, just to get Murphy’s goat. “I hear you didn’t show up for work today. And, in other related news, hell froze over.”

Behind them, his mom’s voice rang out like a gong. “Kyle Sullivan, you wash your mouth out. There’ll be no mention of that sort of inferno in my home.”

Murphy didn’t have to turn around to see that his mom would be hiding a smile as she darted out of the room with her hands full of dishes. She was whippet thin, with rosy cheeks, black hair streaked with gray and eyes that matched the blue of the most beautiful silks she worked with in the tailor shop his parents had owned for twenty years.

Murphy just shook his head, eager to get back into his thoughts and fantasies of Tam.

“No problem, I can win her over again.” Kyle kept stirring, as was required for the roux. “Anyway, aren’t you going to answer me? Why’d you stay home today? I thought it’d take Armageddon for that to happen.”

“Food poisoning, I think.” The lie slipped easily from his tongue. It was becoming simple.

It was almost horrifying.

Almost.

“Man, you’ve been eating your own food. Didn’t I say your cooking sucked?” Kyle pointed to Murphy’s concoction. “Proof is right there.”

Hot kisses, soft skin, sweet moans and sighs…Murphy was too far gone inside his head to engage Kyle.

It didn’t take long for his cousin to back off and stop yapping. And soon, as they put the finishing touches on their dishes—having weaved around each other with ease because they’d cooked together often enough—Murphy actually came out of his sexual fog long enough to notice Kyle’s frown.

What was it with him? Was he pissed at Murphy for ignoring him?

Everyone settled in at the table. Unlike Sunday brunch, when all of the family got together, including Kyle’s three sisters and their families, it was just the four of them: Mom, Dad and the boys.

Ah, yes, Mom the Peacemaker, he thought, casting a glance at her as they finished saying grace.
