“I didn’t know about the metaphor thing.”

“And you could have gone the rest of your life without finding out.”

“So why did the papers you wrote for English lit suck so badly?”

“Because I didn’t give a crap about English lit?”

She shook her head. “Nope. Don’t buy it. You cared about everything in school because you wanted your degree for your family.”

“I wrote crap papers so you’d have to fix them.”

She sat up straight. “What?”

“I didn’t really need a tutor, you know. But when Derek suggested it so I wouldn’t stress over flunking out…”

Her blood pressure began to rise. “You were never on the verge of getting kicked out?”

“Nope.”

“So I wasted all that time tutoring you instead of focusing on my own work?”

“It wasn’t a waste.”

“Easy for you to say,” she grumbled, though she really wasn’t mad. She couldn’t be.

“C’mon, Milla. Admit it. That time we spent together without hiding or sneaking around was pretty damn good.”

The hiding and sneaking wasn’t so bad, either. “Maybe. But that doesn’t excuse you for lying to me.”

This time his cynical laugh was tinged with sarcasm. “We lied to everyone else, why not each other? And don’t tell me you never lied to me.”

Did he know about her parents? How Derek had been their choice of son-in-law? She swallowed hard, drew her knees to her chest. “What if we make a deal? Right here and now.”

“I’m not a big fan of deals.”

“Too bad. You make this one, or you never see me again.”

“I know where you live.”

“I’ll move,” she lied.

“I know where you work.”

“I’ll transfer,” she lied.

“You can’t not see me again. You need a date for Friday,” he reminded her.

“I have a little black book filled with names.”

“What’s the deal?”

She loved it when he gave in. “From now on, from this very moment, we never lie to each other again.”

“Sounds like an admission of guilt, to me.”

“Deal or no deal?”

“Now it sounds like a TV show.”

“Rennie? I’m going to hang up on you in about five seconds…four, three, two—”

“Yeah, yeah, all right. No more lies.”

“Even little white ones.”

“Cross my heart and hope to get you naked.”

“You’re hopeless, you know that?”

“So I’ve been told.”

“By who?”

“Uh-huh. Just because I’m bound not to lie doesn’t mean I’m bound to tell you the truth.”

“Fine.”

“But, since I have agreed to your deal…”

“Yes?”

“I want to hear more about that bra you’re wearing,” he said, and she dissolved into laughter.

INSTEAD OF SHOPPING for something colorful to wear, Milla spent the rest of the week inordinately busy at work and ended up settling for basic black on Friday.

Black was always in, always appropriate. She wasn’t happy that she’d somehow let it take over her closet, but at least she wouldn’t have to worry about evening wear anytime soon.

And if Rennie didn’t like it, well, she wasn’t dressing for Rennie. Okay, she was, and her Wednesday night closet raid easily outed her lie.

But since they’d only agreed not to lie to each other, she had every right to go on lying to herself. Though
