Chapter Ten

Graham

She loves me.

She loves me and I love her.

This solidifies my decision. I’m done. I’m taking Eva away from this city and we’re never coming back here again.

Hopefully I can convince my sister to come with us, but if she doesn’t want to then I’ll mail her the money she needs. Somehow, some way, I’m leaving my father and this life behind. He won’t be happy about it, but I don’t care.

I have Eva and her love, and that’s all I’ll ever need.

We’re eating breakfast the next morning when Mr. Montalbano returns from his business trip.

“Good morning!” He props his suitcase against the kitchen doorway.

“How was your trip, sir?”

“It went well.” He walks over to where Eva is standing at the island and holds his arms open. “How’s my baby girl doing?”

She steps into his embrace but doesn’t lift her arms to return the hug. “Fine. Got a lot of work to do today, so we were just about to leave. Come on, Big Guy.”

“Evangeline,” he calls after her. “I was hoping we could have dinner together tonight. I’d like to give Graham here the night off. I’m sure he could use it.”

Eva’s about to protest, I can see it written on her face. But I offer her the slightest shake of my head.

Her shoulders slump. “Sure, I guess.”

Montalbano’s face spreads into a wide smile. “Fantastic! I’ll make reservations at Carmine’s. It’ll be like the good old days.”

“Can’t wait,” she says flatly.

“Enjoy your night off, Graham. I’ll see you back here tomorrow morning.”

I nod. “Thank you, sir.”

I follow Eva out into the hallway to wait for the elevator. Checking that the coast is clear, I wrap my arms around her waist and nuzzle my nose against her neck. “Your father just wants to spend some time with you.”

“And I want to spend time with you.”

“You’ll see me tomorrow. He deserves some time too.”

“Where will you go?”

“I owe my sister and niece a visit.”

Eva juts her bottom lip out. “No fair.”

I tug her into the elevator as the door slides open. “We can have lunch with them one day soon so you can meet them.”

“You promise?” She looks up at me with her big brown eyes, and I’d promise her anything she wants.

“I promise.”

“You’ve met Deanna and my father. I just want to meet the people who are important to you.”

I brush the tip of my nose against hers. “You’re important to me, you know that?”

Finally, a smile blooms on her face. “Ditto.”
