CHAPTER TEN
Saturday afternoon
The Navigator was loaded with dog paraphernalia. They stopped at PetSmart before making the trip home. Widget had a doggie bed, a kennel, several chew toys, a Frisbee and a few tennis balls. They also bought a dog food that was fresh from a refrigerator in the store. Gary told him that even though it cost more, he liked the idea of real meat protein and fresh vegetables along with no preservatives. They even picked up some of the cat variety for Leo.
Gary glanced at his phone when he came into the house. He must have had it on vibrate because he had a message from Sam. “Can you take Widget out for a walk while I return this call?”
Gary dialed Sam from his contacts and he answered on the first ring. “Sam Stein here.”
Gary sat down on a beige leather chair in the kitchen. “This is Gary Sayer. I’m returning your call.”
“Gary, I got a call from NBC. They want one of their anchors from New York to do this instead of someone from the sports department.”
Gary got up and paced. “What does this mean to us?”
“Can you get up to the city tomorrow instead of Monday? They want to lead with this story on their Sunday night magazine. They want to talk about homophobia in sports and in the locker room.”
“Sam, I don’t want to make this an indictment of professional baseball. I know there is rampant homophobia in the sport, that’s why I wouldn’t come out while I was still playing, but I won’t be saying anything nasty about my teammates or the Yankee organization. Those are the rules or I take it elsewhere.”
“Okay, I can understand that. Let me get back to you.”
“By the way, if they renege on the agreement, Danny and I will walk off the set. I hope I’m making myself clear here.”
“Crystal. I would feel the same way. I’ll be back to you within the hour.”
Just as Sam was about to hang up, Gary said, “I hope you notified the PR office at the Yankees Organization. I had twelve good years with the organization. I don’t want to blindside them.”
“I took care of that this morning.”
“How did they feel about this?” Gary asked wondering if he had burned all his bridges.
Sam said, “The PR person, one Matthew Kendricks, said that times were changing even in the sports world. He noted that your orientation never affected your ability to throw a ball or use a bat, so the Yankees were okay with it. They’ll probably issue a press release wishing you well. Now I’ve got to go if you want tomorrow to run smoothly.”
Gary hung up as the screen door shut. “Is that you, baby?”
“Yes, Sir. Widget did his business. He’s been cooped up at the shelter and in the car. We should probably let him run in the yard or play with him.” Danny picked up the Frisbee.
