Chapter Eleven

ALL OF RYAN’S SENSES shot into overdrive as he quickly sized up the situation. The three men were big and bulky, with an unmistakable air of aggression that let him know things were going to get messy.

“Got a light?” the one Ryan pegged as the leader asked. Judging from the quality of his clothes and gold watch around his wrist, robbing tourists paid well in this part of town.

“Sorry, don’t smoke.” Ryan stepped in front of Vicky to shield her from the coming shit storm. He kept his stance relaxed, his arms loose at his sides, his pulse quickening the way it always did when he was about to get into a fight. “You don’t want to do this.”

The leader scoffed, completely ignoring the warning. “Sure we do. We’ll take your wallet, your watch, your phones, and the lady’s purse. Now be a good boy and hand them over, and we might let you keep the lady.”

Dark, primal instincts flared in Ryan like a match to gasoline, and he barely kept them under control. Now wasn’t the time to fly off the handle. He needed his wits about him, especially considering he was outnumbered three to one. He glanced down at his watch before fixing his focus back on the men. “Sorry, fellas. My sister gave me this watch. She’d have my head if I let a bunch of assholes take it away from me. So how about a counter offer? If you leave now, I promise not to put you in the hospital.”

The leader made a derisive sound. “You got balls, I’ll give you that. But that’s going to cost you the girl.”

It took everything Ryan had not to deck him right then and there. Jaw clenched, he growled, “I don’t think so.”

The guy to his left pulled out a knife, and Vicky gasped behind him.

“Don’t be a fucking hero,” the leader snapped. “Just hand it over and nobody has to get hurt.”

The thug with the knife edged closer, while the third guy leered at Vicky in a way that red-lined Ryan’s adrenaline. He kicked high, catching the leader in the face with the heel of his boot, and the satisfying crunch of cartilage filled the night air. Blood poured from the guy’s broken nose as he dropped to the ground like a marionette whose strings had just been cut.

The knife wielder slashed out, the blade slicing Ryan’s upper arm, but the sting barely registered in his mind. Teeth bared, he grabbed his attacker’s wrist and yanked hard to the left, ignoring the asshole’s high-pitched scream as he took the knife from the man’s limp hand.

Cradling his broken wrist, the guy spun around and took off down the street.

Through the red haze of rage, Ryan locked his focus on the remaining guy, ready to tear his fucking head off if he so much as looked at him wrong. But the would-be robber’s hands were already raised in a gesture of surrender. Shaking his head, the man slowly backed away until he disappeared around the corner.
