Chapter 22
The interview with Jared hadn’t been a dead end. It was probably more informative than most of what they’d done in this investigation. In the silence of her office, though, Melissa couldn’t shake the feeling that they were sifting through debris and hoping the splinters might tell them how big the tornado had been and which way it had gone. It all seemed useless. Pointless. Even when something did seem to take them closer to the answers, it never took them close enough.
They now had confirmation that Shangri-La existed, but what good did it do? They knew the incels were behind the acid attacks, but they had no real-world names. No one in custody. Whoever had encouraged the attack—not to mention whoever had attacked Troy Edwards, Lou Mays, Brett Harper, and all the others—was still out there. Nameless. Faceless. Fearless.
Melissa drummed her nails on the edge of her desk. She was used to being frustrated, but now it was unbearable. As if the answer was just beyond her fingertips, and no matter how many leads she followed, she couldn’t quite reach it. It was like they kept getting closer and closer to a door, kept getting a better picture of what that door looked like and how it was constructed and how it was sealed, but no matter what, they couldn’t get through it. They couldn’t see past it.
There were people behind these assaults and murders. Faces. Names. Addresses. Someone was orchestrating the violence. Someone was carrying it out. Someone was going to kill a lot of people, and soon.
And all Melissa could do was keep beating her head against an impassable door and hope someone came along and opened the fucking thing.
As she turned her chair, intending to pick up one of the thousands of file folders she’d been through millions of times, a photo of her and Shel caught her eye. A sudden, unwelcome ache filled her throat. Her gut told her his death was related to this case. It also told her that if he were alive, he’d be able to offer some insight or think of some angle that the team hadn’t. He’d been an FBI agent for almost thirty years. He was the man who could walk into a baffling crime scene, take a single look around, and zero in on the needle that no one else had seen in the haystack, and that needle would be the key to solving everything.
But Shel was gone. All his insights and genius were gone. Her partner and her friend—gone. This case had been frustrating from the start, but now that it had taken away people she loved, it was infuriating. She was used to investigations that were three steps forward and two steps back, but this was just baby step after baby step closer to a door that may as well have been a wall, and goddammit now was not the time for her emotions to close in, but there they fucking were.
She turned the photo facedown, but it didn’t help.
