“TIA,” MOTHER BONAVENTURE suddenly tapped her on the shoulder. “Your cab is here. I took the liberty of paying him for you. I’m sure you didn’t plan on paying for a cab fare tonight,” she added kindly.

“Thank you so much, Mother.” Tia gazed into Mother Bonaventure’s compassionate brown eyes. She wanted to stay longer and tell her about all of her questions, but she was exhausted from the day’s events, and her arm ached. What she really needed more than anything else was to get safely home with Troy, take a long, hot shower, and go to sleep. As always, Mother Bonaventure genuinely seemed to understand.

“We’re always here if you need us, Tia,” she said reassuringly.

Tia gently raised Troy to a sitting position to help him wake up. He was just too big to carry, especially with his book bag and Thunder.

“Troy!” she said softly. “Wake up!”

Troy opened his eyes gradually, blinking, unsure of where he was.

“We’ve got to go home now. Come on, get up!” Tia helped him to his feet, and he yawned. Then, remembering the storm, he huddled against Tia and pressed his face into her hip.

“It’s okay, the storm is over now. We don’t have to walk, we can take a cab. Okay?”

“Okay,” Troy mumbled.

Mother Bonaventure slowly walked with them to the front doors.

“We’ll be praying for you, dear,” she said, giving them both a warm hug. “Take care of your sister, Troy.”

“Okay, I will,” he promised, yawning hugely.
