CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

One second, I blinked at the complete one-eighty in my oldest friend’s personality, and the next, I watched as his tense form slipped out the door.

Um, what? I repeated for the thousandth time.

Brien and I had shifted from dredging up his horrific experiences in the military to something that happened to me a long time ago, and he managed to hold it together until the end before he displayed that level of anger?

Well, yeah, my mind whispered. He said you’re the one.

Raised voices in the living room stole my attention before I traveled too far down that heart-wrenching rabbit hole.

My immediate response was to chase after Brien and do some damage control, but I suspected it was already too late when Rory’s exclamation of, “She said what?” echoed through the cabin.

I sighed, toed off my shoes, and scooted back onto the bed to lean against the wall.

The late hour, not to mention being dragged through an emotional wringer since arrival—scratch that, since Banks showed his traitorous face at the restaurant—wore me down.

I could use a good nap or three.

“Where is she?” Rory demanded, his voice already growing closer. “Is she in the bunk room?”

Brien’s voice, still tight with anger, called, “No, she’s in the other room.”

Since we’d never turned the lights on, finding it easier to talk in the dim glow provided by the front porch lights, Rory actually stomped past the open, darkened doorway.

“No,” Brien corrected, his voice also approaching, along with what sounded like an entire herd of feet. “Not the exercise room.”

That confirmed my estimation of a three-bedroom cabin, because not even a breath later, Rory’s broad form filled the doorway as an intimidating silhouette backlit from behind.

I spotted the outline of his neck muscles moving as his gaze sought mine, stopping once he reached my curled up form on the narrow mattress.

His features were indiscernible, since he stilled at the threshold away from the window’s light, and he didn’t get a chance to speak before the rest of the guys crowded in. One of them, Flint or Eli based on the size, jerked Rory back, and another shut the door.

“What the fuck?” the furious redhead swore. “I want to hear it from her. Back the hell off!”

“No, man,” Eli replied, his voice also elevated enough to filter through the walls. “I know you don’t have bad intentions for Sasha. Hell, you’ve saved her more than once, and she sought you out to help with her bandages.”

A snort sounded. “Yeah, don’t read too much into it. She singled me out because she didn’t think I would explode at the sight of the fucking brand carved into her back—not to mention the one thing she can’t stand more than me are the people at Gamma. Who the fuck else would she trust to treat her in the middle of their goddamned headquarters? You heard what Brien just said. I thought it was bad enough when those douchebags egged her and called her names. Bullying is a bitch, but she overcame it.
