Chapter 6

Liam stared at the corpse on the autopsy table. Even though he had suspected murder at the back of his mind and half-heartedly hoped that was the case – only because he thought Hannah deserved better – he still could not believe Drew Jameson was dead.

Yet here he was. Liam had memorized Drew’s face enough to know that he was the one lying lifeless on the table.

“Cause of death?” he asked the coroner, Karen.

“Strangulation,” Karen answered. She pointed to the X-ray on the wall. “The lack of ligature marks and multiple fractures on the neck suggest he was strangled with bare hands.”

A man’s crime, Liam thought. Women usually smothered their victims if they wanted them to stop breathing.

“There’s evidence of a struggle,” Karen added. “But obviously, it was futile.”

A man stronger than Drew.

Just then, Steve entered the room. “Things just got tougher, huh?”

“I don’t know about tougher,” Liam answered. At least now they knew where Drew was. “Though it definitely got nastier.”

“Drew’s body was found in an RV park near Salem,” Steve informed. “The weird thing is that it seems he was already buried and then someone dug him up.”

“That is weird,” Liam agreed. He turned to Karen. “When did he die?”

“He’s been dead for days,” Karen said.

“He was probably killed shortly after he left the airport,” Steve told him. “In fact, it’s likely the killer was in his car. It hasn’t been found yet but the search has been intensified. If we can find the car, we can find clues about his killer.”

“Car-napping?” Liam asked.

Steve shrugged. “Or maybe a crazy hitchhiker. We don’t know yet.”

“Or maybe someone he knew.”

“Right now, we have a lot of maybes. What we need is evidence. If you find any, let me know.”

“Of course.”

Steve placed a hand on his shoulder. “How’s Mrs. Jameson doing?”

Liam paused. The last time he had seen Hannah, she seemed like she was in a trance, hardly saying or doing anything. He couldn’t blame her. Her husband had died—murdered, no less. She was probably hoping to see him again alive, to talk things through with him and reach some sort of closure so she could move on with her life. That was no longer possible.

Asshole.

He sighed. “I hope she’s going to be alright.”
