Minnie’s intercom buzzer went off; in a brief moment of confusion, she thought it was her alarm clock.

“Charlie?” she said, without thinking. She’d passed out with him there, after such a wonderful night … the memory came back, and its warmth replaced the empty feeling that she had upon realising that he was gone. With a smile on her face, the buzzer already forgotten as she started to drift away again, Minnie closed her eyes and rolled over.

Bzzzzzzzzt.

Her eyes jerked open again, this time coming back to full consciousness. That wasn’t her alarm; that was someone pressing the call button to her flat. She then registered the lack of light in the room; looking at her clock, she saw the time: 2:13 a.m. It was after two in the morning? Who the hell was calling now? The area wasn’t the nicest, sure, but she immediately began to worry about any smackheads that might be wandering around. She’d never seen one, of course, but in the dark, all alone, her mind easily played tricks.

Don’t be an idiot. It’s not a smackhead, and even if it was there’s two sets of doors between outside and up here. It might even be—

She sat up, excited. Might it be Char—Chuck? As she corrected herself, she realised how she’d not used his name at all over dinner, not able to call him Chuck to his face, but not feeling it appropriate to call him Charlie, even though he was Charlie … either way, she threw on her dressing gown and made her way to the intercom by the front door. Had he forgotten something? If it had been anyone else, the thought of someone coming to her flat in the middle of the night two hours after the date had ended would have seemed weird in the extreme, but with Charlie? No chance. She picked up the intercom’s handset.

“Hello?” she said, her mouth close to the receiver. She found herself hoping that it would be Chuck. Even though she didn’t want to rush anything—it would be so easy—she still wanted to hear his voice, to have him near.

“Minnie?” said the voice on the other end. It was Chuck; a little jolt ran through Minnie’s body. He sounded sheepish, embarrassed. “Look, I’m so, so fucking sorry to be calling on you in the middle of the night like this. I tried your phone, but it was turned off.”

“It’s okay, it’s okay … what’s happened?” He sounded so worried that she could almost picture him hopping from foot to foot. Her excitement was replaced by concern.

“I … shit … look, I need to tell you something. It’s gonna sound like the weirdest fucking thing in the world, and I’ll understand if you never wanna see me again afterwards, but I think it could be really, really important. I wouldn’t even tell you any of this, if I didn’t think …”

Minnie froze, and waited for him to finish. She suddenly knew what he was going to say next, even though it couldn’t be true.
