I glanced up from my computer at the sound of a knock on my office door.

“How’s it going, Bridget?” I asked.

Bridget walked in with a file in her hand and sat in one of the chairs on the opposite side of my desk.

“Good. Actually, it’s going great. I’ve got two loans I’m closing on today,” she shared. “But I needed you to look this one over for me.”

She held the folder out to me. Once I took it from her, she asked, “What about you?”

“I’m doing okay,” I replied, opening the file.

“Is everything okay with your sister?” she wondered.

Looking up from the paperwork in front of me, I gave Bridget a curious look and answered, “Yes. Well, as far as I know, it is. Why do you ask?”

She shrugged and explained, “It’s just that I couldn’t help but notice how joyful you’ve been lately. For the last couple of weeks, it’s like you’ve had an extra skip in your step. It doesn’t seem that way today, so I thought maybe she was struggling in rehab or something.”

Shaking my head, I insisted, “No. Evie is doing well. In fact, we’re going to be taking the kids to visit her next week. She’ll get to see them on Wednesday evening, which should be a nice treat for both her and the kids the day before Thanksgiving.”

“That’s great,” Bridget piped up. “If she’s allowed visitors now, she must be making positive improvements and progress in the right direction. I assume you’ve been able to talk to her then, right?”

“Two days ago, I spoke to her for the first time since she went in for treatment,” I started. “It was mostly a pleasant conversation. The majority of the phone call centered around the kids. Of course, she eventually shared that she was allowed to have visitors starting next week and wondered if I’d bring Cooper and Corinne in to see her.”

“They must be so excited,” she surmised.

Nodding, I confirmed, “They are. I’m so happy for them. Part of me is hesitant to get too excited because I just don’t know if this will stick, but I try to stay positive about all of it in front of the kids. I really want my sister to succeed.”

Bridget offered a friendly smile and assured me, “I’m sure she’s going to do everything she can to be successful. The fate of her life with her children is at stake.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, looking down again and continuing to review the loan documents. “This is an excellent loan, Bridget. Great clients.”

“Aren’t they?” she asked. “Those were my exact thoughts when they submitted their personal financial statement to me. Like I couldn’t have asked for a more qualified couple. Despite that, it was far more rewarding to get the loan approval for my second closing today. Sometimes, I like the challenge of getting that loan approved for the ones that are a little less fortunate. It feels good, you know?”

“I do.”

Bridget gave me a few minutes to finish reviewing everything before she asked, “So, are you sure you’re okay?”

“What? Yes.
