CHAPTER ELEVEN

DAN WAS HUNKERED DOWN in his alfalfa field, the midday sun warm on his shoulders as he tinkered with the intricate knotting mechanism on an old hay baler.

As he worked he kept an eye on Bella and Josh. He’d joined them under the tree for lunch, to Josh’s delight, and had been surprised at how pleasant it felt in the middle of a busy workday to lie back in the shade while the leaves of a spreading oak tree rustled overhead and his little boy clambered all over him, shouting with laughter.

Now he was back at work, and Josh and Bella were involved in some kind of game that involved pulling petals from the wild daisies growing at the base of the tree. Together they chanted lines from a nursery rhyme she’d been teaching the child, and occasionally Dan heard a peal of laughter.

While he watched, Josh stood up and ran away from her, looking over his shoulder. As she was clearly expected to, Bella got up and gave chase, at last sweeping up the giggling little boy into her arms. She carried him back to the shade of the tree and eventually he settled drowsily in her lap, his thumb jammed in his mouth, curly head resting against her shoulder.

Dan forced his attention back to the hay baler, frowning. He’d been a real fool to get himself so deeply involved in this painful, confusing mess. But what choice did he have? The woman had been terrified and completely helpless.

If only he’d just given her shelter, let her stay at the house in safety and do some work to earn her keep. He should never have taken the drastic step of actually marrying her.

Dan shook his head wearily and tugged the cap lower over his eyes.

Because they were married, it was necessary for them to share a bed. Otherwise the kids were bound to say something to Bubba about the odd situation at home. Word would start to travel around the community that there was something funny about Dan Gibson’s marriage.

And living this close to Austin and her ex-husband, Bella couldn’t afford to become conspicuous in any way, or she would be in danger again.

But the truth was, this simple act of sharing a bed with her was turning out to be the hardest thing he’d ever done. Dan had actually thought their sleeping arrangements would be no problem for the brief time she would be in his house. For one thing, he was always so tired at night that he slept like a dead man. And when Bella had first arrived, she’d been such a wretched little thing, pitiful as a wet kitten. He hadn’t given enough consideration to the possibility of his being physically tempted by her.

But today, after spending the whole night lying at the woman’s side, pretty much all Dan could think of was having wild, passionate sex with her.
