Assad

November

As the news of Young Dolph’s murder began to spread around the city, the mafia mourned him as if they knew him. His music, like a lot of other Memphis rappers, had been the soundtrack and motivation of their lives. Before they could even go to the memorial and pay their respects, shots rang out, and Assad made the executive decision that the mafia pull back. Tensions were already thick. The last thing they needed was extra heat coming from any direction.

The only thing that made the day better was the reason he was out and about. As “Get Paid” switched to “Still Smell Like It” on his Young Dolph playlist, he parked in front of Savant’s house. He was the most fucked up behind Dolph’s death, so Assad made his house his first stop.

Rolling the windows down on his Camaro, Assad cut it off… allowing what had easily become Savant’s anthem to ring through. Cutting the volume up higher, Assad dialed Savant’s number and told him to come outside.

Assad got out of the car and leaned against it. At the sight of his oldest brother, he grinned. As soon as Savant heard what was playing, he chuckled quietly, body bouncing and swaying as he paused to rap along. Lifting his eyes toward the sky, Assad said a quick prayer for Dolph’s family before pulling the blunt from behind his ear and placing it between his lips to light. The biggest smoker in the family, Assad had a bottle of Hennessy Black for them all to toast to for the occasion.

“Wassup, Black?” Savant greeted, accepting the blunt Assad offered.

“Shit, making my rounds. I need you to be one of my best men with Hassan. You with it?”

Savant smiled as he nodded. “Fa sho. That’s to be expected, little brother. You know I got you.”

They shook hands before Assad grabbed the bottle of Hen and one of the shot glasses for them to toast. Since he couldn’t choose between his brothers, he’d decided that both would hold that honor.

Even though he and Savant bumped heads, it was always out of love and respect. No matter what was to be said of Savant and his delivery of certain things, he loved and protected his siblings to no end. It was hard separating the blurred line of brother and father because of how little Colton molded them as men, and a lot of who Assad was, was because of Savant. He wasn’t going to tell him that and blow his head up even more… then his ass would always have some shit to say.

“This how you doing it?” Savant asked, grabbing the shot glass.

“Hell yeah. It’s a celebration, ain’t it?”

With a chuckle, Savant nodded. “Yeah, but I’ma ride your ass around to the rest of the houses before you catch a DUI charge. How many more you got?”

“You my first stop so five or six.”

“Aw yeah. I’ma drive you. Let me tell Addy I’m about to dip for a little bit.” Their glasses clinked before they both knocked their shots down.
