Chapter Twenty-Three
Believe me when I say I had every intention of smoothing things out with Kris. Despite my feelings about her, and what I believe she did back at Jack’s place, I tried to be reasonable and think things through. It wasn’t like I was going to storm into her workplace and start beating her, and then get arrested. Despite what you must think of me, I don’t believe in violence. Instead, I knew I had to talk to her and try to reason with her before this got out of hand. So, I opted for a less aggressive option of putting this whole episode behind us. But as usual, it didn’t go as planned, and I had no idea it was going to fail so badly.
First thing in the morning, I made my way to her—and Jack’s—place of work. That was at Milles & Cleaver. I wasn’t allowed inside after everything that had happened, so I found a bench close by, grabbed a seat, and pulled out my cell phone. I watched people pass by me, doing their own thing, and I watched people come and go from Jack’s office.
My plan was to call the office and, when Kris answered, I’d ask her to come down to the front doors (with security, if it made her feel better) so we could talk it over. Nothing more than that. There was no malicious intent behind me asking her; I just thought that by speaking to her face-to-face, she would maybe understand how I feel and how it was affecting my relationship with Jack. I wanted to tell her that I wasn’t angry, but she had to stay away from Jack for everybody’s sake. A drink was in the cards, too—my treat, even though I knew I was stretching with the offer. But I wasn’t going to get anywhere with that plan.
Because Kris had resigned.
I was as shocked as you probably are, but that’s not the weirdest part. According to the new temp receptionist, Kris had sent an email yesterday claiming that working alongside her boyfriend was causing too much of a domestic crisis and she had to take care of things at home. That left me puzzled as to whether her “boyfriend” was Jack or some other man in the office. But I was so shocked, I was finding it hard to process what I had just heard. If she was referring to Jack, then she was delusional and seriously needed her head examined. I guess you could run next door now and ask her who that was, although I have a feeling I know what she’ll say. Pretty predictable, isn’t she?
Anyway, Jack and I spent a while talking about it that night. We checked out her Facebook profile, looking for anything that might suggest where she was, or why she had left, but to our surprise, she’d removed all traces of herself from social media. As far as I know, she also had an Instagram page, but we couldn’t find that either.
