âWell, hereâs your proof!â Wasser threw an early edition of the New York Times down at my chest.
âThatâs a rude awakening. No âgood morningâ?â
She pointed to the newspaper sitting on my chest. âRead it!â
The bold headline jumped off the paper.
âExplosive Report Exposes CIA Agentsâ
I scooted to the end of the bed and looked up at Wasser, who was still standing above me. âWhen did he do this?â
âNo clue when he submitted the list to the news, but they released it a few hours ago. Against our wishes.â
I looked down at the headlines and then back up at her. âSo, he actually did it!â
âYeah, there are over two hundred names on the list. Thatâs a lot of dead and destroyed lives.â She rubbed the bridge of her nose vigorously. âWell, you wanted proof. Now youâve got it!â
âIâm really sorry to hear that. I guess our work is done here,â I said as I slipped a shirt on.
âNo. Itâs just getting started.â
I squinted. âHuh? Iâm not following.â
âFuller has thousands of names. This was just the beginning.â She started to walk away. âIf heâs not stopped soon, itâs going to get a whole lot worse.â
I threw the rest of my clothes on as I followed her up the stairs. The agents were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The Agency was scrambling, and it was obvious the report caught them off guard. I could only imagine what was going on in the ever-elusive âupstairs.â
Wasser walked over and grabbed two cups of water. She was about to hand one to me when my phone starting buzzing. I looked down and saw it was an unknown caller. I ran outside where it was quiet, and she followed me.
âThis is Dr. Abbott.â
âHi, this is Carl Fuller. Is this a good time to reach you?â he asked.
I looked at Wasser with bulging eyes. âYes, it sure is.â
âDoc, Iâm out of town and wonât be back for a while, but I spoke with those who interviewed you, and weâre all in agreement. I wanted to personally call and invite you to QuoAc. Normally, weâd wait for the background check to clear, but the project we need you on just canât wait. I hope this doesnât catch you off guard. The sooner we get started, the better.â
My Adamâs apple dropped. Wasser stared at me, obviously wondering what was going on.
âMr. Fuller, thatâs really great news. Iâm honored. Iâd love to get started as soon as possible. You tell me when, and Iâll be there.â
âHow about this morning?â He wasnât kidding.
I stared down at my watch. âIâll be there in an hour to an hour and a half.â
âIâll let them know.â Fuller sounded elated, his voice rising. âYouâll be a great addition.â
I hung the phone up and looked at Wasser. âIâm in! They want me there immediately.â
I expected her to rejoice. Instead, she nervously twisted the back of her hair.
âWhatâs wrong?â I asked.
âThe timing is just a little too ironic, isnât it? I mean, he just so happens to be out of town when the names are released and then invites you to come in immediately.
