“America the Beautiful”

I will meditate on the glorious

splendor of Your majesty.

PSALM 145:5

America the Beautiful” was written by professor, poet, and writer Katharine Lee Bates (1859–1929) after an inspiring trip to the top of Pikes Peak, Colorado, in 1893. She said, “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.” Such was the inspiration for this hymn:

O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!
