Fletcher was still thinking about her interview with Ian Gaunt when Nicola Reid knocked on the door. She asked the young woman to take a seat. Fletcher explained that she needed to start building up a picture of Tom Ramsey and the volunteers who had worked with him on the island.

‘You’re asking me to rat on the people I work with?’ Nicola Reid looked up at Fletcher with big, round blue eyes. Fletcher noticed that she had put her auburn hair up in a ponytail.

Fletcher put her pen and notebook down on the table next to them. She was starting to feel tired. The room still felt stuffy despite the fact she had opened the window. ‘I don’t think I would call it “ratting” on them. And I’m sure I don’t need to remind you, Nicola, that this is a murder investigation and a particularly violent one at that.’ She wasn’t about to tell the student that Tom Ramsey had been stabbed thirteen times. Doubtless she’d hear all sorts of horror stories as soon as the press arrived. She considered showing the girl the photographs of the dead Ramsey but hoped to get the information she needed without upsetting the young woman. She reminded herself that everyone reacted differently when faced with a sudden and shocking death, especially murder, and the slightly disinterested air might just be a front.

That was the other thing. They needed to speak with anyone who had a boat. Doubtless the press would try to find any way imaginable to get over to the island to take photos of the scene of the crime. The police needed to warn the locals not to talk to journalists or allow them to hinder the investigation.

Thinking about boats brought something to mind. She turned to the volunteer once more. ‘I understand Tom Ramsey had his own boat?’ No boat had been discovered on the island when they had found the warden’s body.

The girl nodded.

‘But his boat wasn’t used to take you to the mainland for the party?’

‘No. We all got picked up by Angus McCrae.’

‘Do you know where Tom Ramsey’s boat is?’

The girl looked surprised. ‘The Invicta? It should be over on the island. It was there when we left.’

And now it isn’t. Fletcher felt a wave of excitement coursing through her veins. This could be important. Where was Tom Ramsey’s boat? There could only be one answer to this question. The murderer had used Ramsey’s boat to escape from the island. The girl all but forgotten Fletcher then thought of the next obvious question. How had he or she got to the island in the first place? Then it hit her. A third party might have dropped the murderer off. The murderer could have had an accomplice. Finally she felt they were getting somewhere.

‘Can you describe Ramsey’s boat?’

‘I’m not an expert in boats but it was small, painted yellow and white.’

The interview continued. Her stomach rumbled sounding like thunder. She glanced at her watch. It was eight in the evening and she hadn’t eaten anything all day.
