But where? Where’s the middle ground? she asked herself. Answering her own question was taking her all day. Tim’s website glowed in front of her. She compared her scribbles in the margins of the printout of the FAQ page to the original source; neither of those answers helped her. The day slouched toward its end, the late-afternoon light dropping. The wind picked up. Shadows of bare tree limbs shimmied on her bedroom’s wall like water. Vanessa looked out the window. One neighbor, stuffed in a coat, gloves, and stocking cap, waddled out of her condo and bantered with another neighbor who, in his t-shirt, shorts, and gloves, had returned from a run while steam lifted off his shoulders and bald head. They laughed at each other before waving goodbye. The neighbor across from Vanessa had not taken down the holiday lights and garland framing the balcony door. Beer cans and red plastic cups littered the balcony. The year, even though it was new, had shrunk a little more, its surface lower, its core softer. She returned to the FAQ page.

Why does a Christian company and artist make violent and demonic images?

Notes scattered around her and on the floor. She stopped typing because the winter light glared on her computer screen. Rotating her laptop on the mattress distorted her vision. She massaged her hand. Underneath the stack of possible images, color palettes, and other drafts, the paper lay like a black-and-yellow wing folded in a white landscape.
