Chapter Twelve

Over the next few days, James upped our training sessions to twice a day, with fitness work being in the morning and sparring in the afternoon.

Jesse had found nothing in The Alchemist Manual since she’d found half the recipes to be in a completely different language, and translation was going slowly. James was having just as much success with finding the mysterious wolf shifter that was dealing demon blood. And I’d found nothing in the books that James had given me on the bond. We were all on edge and waiting for something else to happen. I just hoped it wasn’t one of the missing women turning up dead.

The extra training sessions with James were doing wonders to my fighting prowess, at least. I’d gotten faster and stronger to where even though he was beating my ass, he was having to work for it now.

I lay on my back with a large smile on my face as beads of sweat trickled down James’ red face. While he wasn’t out of breath, he was breathing faster than he had before, and that was enough of a win for me.

“Again,” he said, offering a hand to me, which I ignored, just like every other time.

I pushed myself onto my feet and fell into a loose fighting stance, with my feet apart and my knees slightly bent. James stepped backwards and into his own fighting stance, his face passive as he sucked in a deep breath and slowly blew it out.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

He charged at me, his body nothing but a blur, but I knew this was coming and deft out of the way, feeling the air brush against my skin from how close he’d missed me. He recovered in an instant and tried for me again, but I ducked and swept at his feet with my leg. My foot connected with his calf and I felt him momentarily lose balance, but he regained it just as quickly and stepped backwards.

As he stepped, he made another move, this time swiping at me with his hand and kicking out with his leg. I dodged his hand, but his foot connected with my upper thigh and knocked me off-balance. I tried to jump backwards and out of his reach, but I underestimated how off-balance I was and staggered. James used this to his advantage and wrapped a hand around my waist, pulling me against him.

He looked down at me, a smirk on his lips. “Do you give up?”

I pushed back against his hold while gritting my teeth against the bond as it flared to life, urging me to melt against his warm body. “Not yet.”

He chuckled and his arm tightened. “And how are you going to get out of this one—oof!”

I kneed him in the groin and his upper body collapsed as his grip loosened. I slipped out and kicked him, my foot landing on his hip. That’s all it took for him to topple to the ground. Before he could get back up, I leaped on top of him, grabbing his hands and pinned them above him while straddling his waist.
