“I can’t do this shit anymore,” Adam moaned.

“Don’t sit down!” Evie said frantically. “If you sit down, you’ll relax, and if you relax, you’ll fall asleep. The car is coming in ten minutes.”

“I look like hell. I look like I’ve been partying all night.” He stared at himself in the mirror hung on the wall opposite the bed. Bloodshot eyes stared back. “Oh, my God. I can’t go on TV looking like this.”

“You’ll be fine. I’ve done commercials after a night like this. You have to go through hair and makeup anyway. Here. Take these.” She handed him a couple of pills and a glass of water. “They’ll perk you up long enough to get through the interview, then you can come back here and crash.”

“No.” Adam put his face against the mirror and leaned into it, staring into his reddened eyes. “Gotta get back to the lake.”

“Nap first, then lake. But not now.” She pulled him upright. “Take those, and I’ll be right back with ice. But don’t sit down.”

Adam swallowed the pills and drank the water, then leaned against the mirror again. “You,” he said to his reflection, “are an idiot.” He knew he shouldn’t have gone out with Evie. They’d done this way too many times for him to have really believed it would be different this time. Turning thirty hadn’t slowed Evie down one damn bit. He shouldn’t have done it. But it had been a long time since he’d seen Evie, and they always had so much fun together . . .

The door opened again and Evie came in with the ice bucket. Turning on the cold water in the sink, she dumped the ice into the water. “Okay. Here’s my trick. Take a deep breath and stick your face in the water.”

“Are you nuts?”

“No. Seriously. This will take out the puffiness and wake you up. And your eyes won’t be as red. And I have drops.”

Adam said, “Your knowledge base is way too esoteric.”

“What the fuck does that mean?”

“I don’t know. The friend I’m staying with talks like that. He said that when I told him he knew the weirdest things.”

“Well, talk like that on the show and the hosts will love you.”

Adam stared at the frigid water, took a deep breath, and plunged.
