CHAPTER ELEVEN

Declan Ramsay eyed himself imperiously in the freestanding mirror as he adjusted his Robin’s egg blue silk tie. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal grey suit, with a crisp white shirt. He stepped over to the bureau in his dressing room, and retrieved a bottle of expensive men’s moisturizer that James had added to the ‘Welcome to the organization’ gift hamper he’d sent, along with Declan’s new, upgraded work ID card. Declan turned the bottle over and tried to read the ingredients, but the writing was miniscule. He gave it a sniff, and it smelled pleasant. He feared it was made with placenta or something equally bizarre, but fuck it, if it kept him looking handsome; he’d give it a try. Declan returned to the mirror and applied the balm to his face, and then ran a comb through his trimmed dark beard — aiming for a smart GQ groomed look rather than caveman hipster.

Sam had left hours before, but he didn’t say where. Me’be I shoulda asked. We are a couple now after all. Declan’s thoughts were far away, mulling over everything Sam had told him days ago about what he did for A.L.L. Declan had never heard the term ‘Agent Runner’ before, and had asked Sam to explain exactly what that meant.

“It’s all a game of strategy, really. My goal is to gather the information the client requires, by whatever means. There’s a kind of... theatre to being a covert operative. “You know you’ll have to do the same eventually”

Declan had nodded, but deep down, he noted the pang of discomfort he’d felt at the thought of pretending to be someone else… of living as a lie. He valued honesty, and, even as a kid was he uncomfortable with duplicity.

“It takes time to groom an informant. You have to figure out what motivates your target, and what their vulnerabilities are. You have to gain their trust, offer something to entice them. Some agents use friendship, favours, money, drugs… sex, of course,” Declan recalled the reeling discomfort he’d felt at hearing this. He could not have continued without asking the question,

“Do you fuck people for James?” he had said fiercely. Even saying those words had nauseated him. He would not have put it past Sir James to prostitute his only son.

“No, I have never fucked anyone for the job. Chance would be a fine thing!” Sam had jested, his brows arched salaciously. “Seriously, you know he hates that I’m gay. I’m sure that’s why he sends me on assignments to Muslim countries. Always another test. It’s imperative that I don’t attract any attention. I’m trained to stay in the shadows, under the radar — I’ve seen first-hand what they do with gay men in Saudi“ Sam had shuddered and was quiet for a moment.

“I’ve never invited
