Chapter 28

‘What on earth are you wearing?’ I asked Esme when I picked her up in a taxi later. She was wrapped in a huge black pashmina. Her wavy blonde hair, which she’d recently had cut to just below her chin, was slicked back off her face and she had a black knitted beret on top. In her hand she clutched a pair of Jackie O shades.

‘You look like a member of the French Resistance,’ I said as she settled herself on the seat of the taxi. ‘And it’s getting dark. I really don’t think you need sunglasses.’

Esme looked offended.

‘I thought we were undercover,’ she said. ‘Incognito.’

I giggled.

‘No,’ I said. ‘We’re just on a night out. I like the hat though.’

Esme pulled the beret off her head and ran her fingers through her hair.

‘So you don’t mind if Richard recognises us?’ she asked as the taxi left the cobbled streets of the New Town and turned on to the main road out of the city.

I shook my head.

‘He’s been to the spa,’ I pointed out. ‘If he’s there, and he sees us ‒ which is unlikely ‒ I’ll just tell him I’ve come to check out his business. It’s true and it could even make him back off a bit, if he thinks I’m considering his offer.’

‘Fair enough,’ said Esme. ‘But I can’t say I’m not disappointed. I was looking forward to a bit of spying.’

She looked at me with narrowed eyes.

‘Are you wearing a skirt?’ she asked. ‘I thought you’d wear trousers and your Louboutins.’

‘Louise has got them,’ I said. ‘I spent about half an hour looking for them before I remembered she put them on this morning.’

‘So there are downsides to being married to a woman,’ Esme said with a grin. ‘Jamie may leave the toilet seat up, but he’s never borrowed my shoes. At least as far as I know.’

I laughed.

‘He’d never get his massive feet into your shoes.’

‘True,’ Esme said. ‘And he can barely stay upright at the best of times. He’d never manage heels.’

‘Here we are, ladies,’ the taxi driver said as we pulled into the casino car park. We were on the edge of the city, towards Edinburgh airport. There were big furniture stores and a huge retail park nearby. It felt a bit American, like an out-of-town shopping mall. I’d never been there before but I could see it was convenient. Loads of parking, a cinema, restaurants ‒ you could stay there all day and not get bored.

I paid the driver and together Esme and I walked into the casino.

‘There’s a bar and a restaurant here,’ I said. ‘I thought we could grab some dinner and go for a couple of drinks afterwards. Just to get a feel of the place.’

‘Sounds good,’ Esme said. ‘Wow!’

Inside the casino was amazing. It was decorated in an art deco style ‒ very Gatsby ‒ with gold fixtures and lots of mirrors. It was beautiful but its vintage interior seemed at odds with its modern box-like appearance from outside and its shopping mall location.
