Chapter 25

Eden

25 days until review hearing

“I miss you, Mom,” Eden said. A sigh rumbled over the phone line. It had been far too long since Eden was able to hear her mother’s voice, months. She wanted to be with her, snuggled in her heavy embrace. Do you think your mother’s disappointed in you? “I’m so sorry Mom.” Tears slid down her cheeks and she pressed the rough cuff of her sleeve against her eyes.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t there for you when you needed me,” came the reply.

Eden was inclined to tell her mother it wasn’t her fault, but the words died on her tongue. They would do nothing to appease her mother’s irrational guilt.

“So, tell me how you’re doing now?” Ruby asked. “How’s the treatment—are you getting everything you need to get well?” This seemed like a conversation they’d had many times before—because they had, and anger roiled in her for continuing the dysfunctional cycle. But could she have gotten pregnant with Finn if she had taken her lithium?

“Yes. I have an excellent doctor, and I think I’m improving.” It was a hope, but it was what she clung to. Doc Lucas seemed so sure of her success; she allowed herself to hope.

“That’s great, Eden. Now, tell me about Finn. And why haven’t I gotten any pictures?”

Guilt, immediate and sharp, speared her. She hadn’t even thought to send her mother pictures of Finn. Being locked away so consumed her she forgot the world had moved on. All things didn’t begin and end at Middle State Psychiatric Hospital.

“I’m sorry—it’s just, I’m trying to figure things out,” Eden said. “I’ll talk to Layla soon and ask her to send some. It’s tough to get things done when you’re not out and about.”

“Don’t worry about me. I’ll reach out to her. I have her number.”

Eden felt a smile pull at her lips. “I love you.”

“I love you too, honey. When you get out, consider moving back down here with me.” It wasn’t a question, it was an option, and Eden had already decided that was what she was going to do. She hadn’t shared this with anyone, including Layla, for fear of upsetting things and how they were going, but nothing good had happened in Eden’s life since moving to Virginia, and she was more than eager to leave the past in the rearview. She wasn’t entirely sure how that would work once she was released—if she would have to check in with someone, like a probationary period.

“Someone came by the house a few weeks ago, looking for Jane—”

Her words echoed over the phone line, and suddenly Eden could feel the humid Miami heat as she’d deplaned. Her heart had skipped as she walked quickly through the terminal to her rental car. While on the plane flying down, she had wondered what she was doing. This was dangerous, but the need would not go away. Ben had done the unthinkable, and she had to make him pay—but under all her seething anger, the
