Chapter 15
Latonya used her old key to enter her grandmotherâs home. She didnât know where else to go, what to do or whom to turn to. Touching her stomach, she hoped that her struggles with Carlton hadnât done any harm to the baby. She would have a checkup as soon as possible. Right after she found herself a good lawyer. She didnât intend to lose either one of her children.
As soon as she walked in the door, Cicely stepped in front of her.
âGirl, you almost got yourself hurt, walking in here like that. I didnât know who that was jingling keys and coming in the house. What are you doing here?â Cicely asked.
âWhat are you doing here? Youâre always here when you should be in school.â Latonya retorted.
âItâs spring break. So, I decided to grace my loving family with my presence. I was going to come see you tomorrow. I just got in a little while ago.â
âHey, Peanut. What are you doing here? Whereâs my great-grandbaby?â Gran walked down the hall into the entryway. âWell, come on in and close the door. You donât look so good, Peanut. Whatâs wrong with you?â
Latonya followed them into the living room and sat down. âHe kicked me out.â
âWhat? Who kicked you out? Carlton? Why would he do that? What happened?â Gran let loose a string of questions as she sat down on the sofa next to Latonya.
Cicely sat on the other side of her. âWhereâs little Carl?â
âHe wouldnât let me take him.â Latonya wrapped her arms around herself as if that would help her hold it together.
âHe canât just take your child! We have to get a lawyer,â Cicely said, and she wrapped her arms around Latonya.
âI donât understand, Peanut. Why would he kick you out and make you leave your baby?â Gran asked.
âHe thinks Iâm having an affair.â
âWhy would he think that? You didnât run around on that man, did youââ Granâs face turned concerned and she clutched her heart.
Appalled, Latonya responded before Gran could finish her statement. âGran! Of course I didnât. Why would you think something like that?â
âEven if she did, that doesnât give him any right to steal her child!â Cicely said.
âI didnât. I had lunch with a colleague. Thatâs all.â Latonya took a deep breath. âCarltonâs grandfather told him some lies. Now Carlton believes I cheated.â
âWhy would that man lie on you?â Gran asked.
Latonya had no idea why the old man despised her so much that he would tell an out-and-out lie on her. Even the reasons she could think to give didnât seem like good enough ones to ruin someoneâs life. âBecause he hates me. He has always hated me. He thinks Iâm a gold digger and he has issues with African-Americans.â
âOh, Lord. I knew you shouldnât have married in with those foreign folk.â Gran clutched her chest again and fanned her face with her other hand. âYou should have married a boy from here and then you wouldnât have to worry about this kind of thing.â
âGran!â Cicely scolded.
