Once Bristol told me her mom had already gone to work, I sprang into action. "Why don't you ask Milo if he could fill in for you? I'll let Bo know I'm taking you to the hospital," I instructed.

It was a calculated move to have Bristol ask Milo, because I had the sneaking suspicion that he'd been harboring a crush on my dark-eyed dog-sitter for a while now. Might as well capitalize on it now, since Charity wasn't the best at handling dogs and Bo was the most efficient at whipping up the specialty drinks. Surprisingly, Milo was pretty good with the dogs, although he hadn't owned any pets growing up.

"Okay," Bristol said, her eyes brimming. I wanted to ask if her uncle Clark had said anything, but she probably didn't even know yet.

Milo agreed to oversee the Barks section far more readily than I'd dared to hope, and Bo encouraged me to get Bristol to the hospital as soon as possible. I wished I had an extra car to give the poor girl, since she always seemed to be bumming rides off others. But even if she could afford to buy a junker, the insurance would be hard to cover because of her age.

Detective Hatcher stood outside the doorway to Clark's room, holding up a cautioning hand as we strode toward him. "Can't go in now, I'm afraid. He was talking a little—even answered some questions—but then he kind of drifted off, and the nurse told us we had to let him rest."

Bristol looked deflated. "My mom—did you let her know? She's at work. I have her number if you—"

Detective Hatcher interrupted. "I've already called and let her know the situation," he assured her. Gesturing to a white-haired woman in scrubs, he told Bristol, "You might want to ask her for more details."

Bristol hurried over to the woman, so I took the opportunity to follow up with the detective. "Did you get my text about Della being near the crash site, probably soon after the wreck? And are there any updates on that camera that was in the vase? Also, did you find Les Stevens?"

Detective Hatcher gave a half-smile. "Whoa, Nelly. Yes, I got your message, and I've been in touch with Della. As for that video camera, Les Stevens' prints were all over it, but there wasn't anything unexpected on it—just footage of when he was setting it up. And finally, no, we haven't been able to track Les down."

Bristol appeared to be deep in conversation with the nurse, so I plunged on. "So...you said Clark answered questions. Did you ask about the wreck? Did he see anything?"

Detective Hatcher gave me a long look. "Since your brother was with the DEA, I trust you know how to keep things quiet. And I'm only telling you this because it might link to the man Bristol described as attacking her—possibly the same one you've seen lurking around town. I want you to call me if he shows up again."

"Got it," I said.
