Chapter 11

“Pardon my consort, here,” Penny said, brushing a stray lock of hair out of her face with the back of her hand. Brook inched closer to Jacks. His ribs still ached. “But he’s kind of a moron. This is our secret retreat to get away from the world, and he foolishly didn’t check with me before inviting you up,” she said, teeth firmly pressed together despite her smile and eyes trained on Fletch. “If you don’t mind just running along now—”

“We know about the sapphires,” Jacks said abruptly.

Penny stopped, her eyes sharp and wide and now trained on Jacks. Jacks didn’t flinch. “You what?” she asked, and it was the sort of falsely calm tone that spoke of real trouble. Brook, tired and nauseated as he was, called to mind a few choice spells and curses, should she decide to attack again.

“Fletch showed us,” he said, his tone softening so as not to appear too aggressive. “We don’t want to step on toes or get you in trouble,” he said. “We want in.” He shrugged to undercut the demand in his words. She wasn’t fooled.

“You want in to what?”

“To whatever you’ve got going,” Jacks said. Brook studied her closely. The clothing she wore was not of the same league as theirs. Her leggings were of a soft and supple leather, molded to the body and worn artfully rather than from wear. Her sweater was a fine knit and her jacket was a leather to match the leggings. She was not from poverty. Or at least, she didn’t have to hide her new-found money the way Fletch did.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, her words pointed. “And even if I did, I’m sure you wouldn’t be bringing up things like that out here in the open air. Not when you’re meant to be here as guests on a little lovers retreat.” She assessed both of them in a look. “So are you lovers or not?”

Brook’s immediate instinct was to jump into Jacks’s arms, but he fought it. It’s what she wanted—for them to react dramatically. But neither of them did, and Brook, instead, changed tactics. He turned to Jacks, reaching for him to grab his attention.

“Let’s just go, Jacks,” he said. “We’re clearly not wanted here, and I don’t want to have to fight again. I’m too tired from the trek here to do magic, anyway,” he said, aware of her listening. If he downplayed his own power and made himself seem vulnerable, he was less of a threat to her. She might think she had the upper hand.

“But we need those sapphires,” Jacks said, his expression pleading, worried, beautiful. Brook was almost swayed, until he remembered Jacks was acting. “I won’t let you get hurt again. And I can’t be there all the time. Every time I have to leave I wonder if I’ll even get to see you again or—” He broke off suddenly, shutting his eyes and forcing a swallow. “I won’t do it again.
