TALK ABOUT IRONY, thought Jessie. According to Lois, there are approximately a quarter of a million people watching me right now, but can I get Nick to look at me? Of course not.

She cleared her throat again, staring hard at Nick.

“Are you okay?” said Malcolm as he finished off his breakfast. He stood up and came over to look down at her with concern. “You’re not feeling feverish are you?”

“No, I’m fine,” said Jessie. She kicked her foot hastily over the word she’d written in the sand. “I’ve just got a frog in my throat.”

She looked at Nick again but he was handing a bottle of water over to Kenny. “So what’s everyone planning to do today?” he said absently.

“I’m going to try and find that shark,” blurted Malcolm. He looked enviously at Jessie’s leg. After she’d left Nick, she had washed it off with fresh water and quickly scampered into bed. The large graze was still a bit tender, but Jessie thought it looked worse than it was.

“It’ll be gone out to sea again,” said Nick kindly. “It’s unlikely you’ll see him.”

“I know,” said Malcolm sadly. He took a few steps towards the beach and folded his arms, looking out at the gently rolling waves. Optimism returned to his face. “I’m still going to try.”

“My God,” said Cindi, rolling her eyes. “What kind of lunatic actively goes looking for a shark?” She yawned hugely, stretching her arms above her head. “I’m still tired,” she complained. “I wish you’d told us last night that we were going to have a day off from challenges. I could have slept in.”

“I guess that answers my question about what you’ll be doing,” said Nick.

“I think I’ll go to the lagoon again,” said Jessie. She stared at Nick, her eyes watering as she willed him to look at her.

Cindi perked up, interested. “Ooh, I’d like to see this famous lagoon. I think I’ll go with you.”

Jessie thought fast. “That would be fun. I’m going to trek to the north beach first, and then I want to climb the two peaks on the way to the lagoon. We’ll have to carry lots of water because the sun will be directly overhead by the time we hit the second one.”

“Forget it,” said Cindi, slumping back against the tree trunk. “I’ll stick to plan A.”

Jessie feigned a look of disappointment and then returned to her primary objective.

“Nick?” she said, stretching out her leg. “Could you check the graze for me? Just to make sure it’s not infected or anything.”

“Sure,” he said, coming over and kneeling by her leg.

While he was looking at the wound Jessie wiggled her fingers to get his attention and then pointed to the words she’d traced in the sand.

Lagoon, please.

She watched him read them and then he paused before looking up at her. She widened her eyes. He looked away and she tapped the sand again, prodding the word please.

He met her eyes again and then Jessie hurriedly brushed her fingers through the sand as Malcolm came back and dropped to his knees next to them.
