Scene Five

Enter the Journalist catching the film reel in mid run.

JOURNALIST: What are you doing? You can’t throw away something that sensational! (To Monsieur, in an affable way) That Holey, helluva fool, yeah? Starting a punch up in a boat when he can’t swim.

MONSIEUR (reining him in with an icy stare. He replies tersely and with distaste): I am aghast at such an unseemly remark.

MADAME: To think of how they tortured him.

JOURNALIST (at a loss): Tortured?

WIFE: They say his eyes were put out.

TOURIST: The soles of his feet set light.

MISSIONARY: His body defiled.

JOURNALIST (confused): Excuse me? Hold on there.

MONSIEUR (beside himself): I will not excuse you!

MADAME (beside herself): To mock the dead body of a martyr. We will not excuse it.

MONSIEUR: We must have a reckoning. We must not let the reputation of the great powers be trampled into the mud.

JOURNALIST (going along with them uncertainly): Uh-huh ... Uh-huh ... (It dawns on him.) Okay! Now I get it! I get it!

MONSIEUR (tersely): How gratifying.

JOURNALIST (snatching out a pen and writing on his cuff): So – bringing pressure to bear in Peking and Washington – formal diplomatic complaints – indignation.

MONSIEUR: Peking! Washington! To hell with shilly-shallying!

MISSIONARY: Any delay is unthinkable.

WIFE (shrieks, on the brink of losing complete control of herself): Apologies! Declarations! Mediators! Captain!

MONSIEUR (outraged): What are you suggesting? Drag the matter through the embassies? Captain!
