Chapter Eight

The voice of reason prevailed Friday night.

Weirdly, that voice sounded an awful lot like my friend Megan, the same person who hosted parties so she could get safely plastered while simultaneously getting her extroverted people fix. I’ve told her Sixth Street in downtown Austin and Uber are cheaper, but she claims her parties are epic and way more fun.

Four margaritas (versus the eight I’d have consumed without intervention) and only half my weight in chips and cheese still left me feeling a little slow Saturday morning.

Since I’d just beat my deadline by more than a week, I decided to take the day off. In other words, I slept half the day and cleaned my neglected house the other.

With my internal clock and my living space reset to almost normal, I was more than ready for my date with Simon.

He hadn’t actually called it a date, but what else was it when a guy asked you to “go out” with him and insisted on picking you up?

Funny story. I, the woman who didn’t dither over wardrobe choices, dithered that Saturday evening. It wasn’t about wanting to look good or trying to impress him. No, it was about wearing a dress or not wearing a dress, because last time I’d specifically worn one for easy access, and that felt like maybe not the right choice this evening.

But then my inner emotional weenie screamed: this is just a chance for sex, crazy bitch! Because I’d already decided nothing more could happen.

Reminder: Don’t get attached, Becs.

My choices: wear the dress that I didn’t want to wear (for whatever weird reason, because it’s not like I didn’t want to have sex with Simon), or go with my gut?

After ten minutes of dithering—and when it came to clothes, ten minutes for me was a ridiculously long period of time—I grabbed a pair of black ripped skinny jeans, a silvery dolman top and the same bitch boots I’d worn with my Red Riding Hood costume. They worked great with the tight jeans since they laced and stopped a few inches below my knee. Bam, clothing decision made.

Another three minutes for makeup—including pink lip gloss, mascara, and a single spritz in the air of a light perfume that I walked through—and I was done.

Which was when my doorbell rang. I’d take it as a good omen. Not that I believed in good omens, but whatever.

I opened the door to flowers.

There was a man there, too, but he was hidden behind the flowers. Not that it was a huge bouquet. It wasn’t. But…flowers. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had live flowers in the house, and even then, I’d bought them myself.

It was so sweet, so thoughtful, so…morbid. A grin spread across my face. “They’re black and red.” I met the gaze of the man behind my vampire roses and laughed. “I love them.”

He stretched out his offering with a sheepish look. “Bit of a gamble, but when I asked the florist if she thought they were a good idea for a writer of vampire comedy horror, she said emphatically yes.
