Chapter Six

When the latest promotion finished a week later, Kylie was finishing the last of the paperwork for the day and was getting things ready for the next day when there was a knock at the door. Mary must have left, she thought.

“Come on in.” She called out. The door opened, and Tom came in with a smile.

“Hello Tom, how can I help you? I hope it isn't an emergency, I was hoping we could all get out of her at a decent hour.” He laughed, and she liked his laugh. There were no inhibitions in it. When he laughed, you knew he found it funny.

“No emergencies Kylie. I was just going to stop at O'Mally's for beer and wondered if you would like to join me?” She smiled. She had always got along with Tom and thought, why not? She could use a break and don't have any other plans.

“If you can give me a half hour I will be ready to go. I could meet you there if you want to take off.”

“Sounds good. I'll grab some seats, it will start filling up soon.” Tom said. She waved as he left, and she went back to finishing up. Once she felt everything was ready for the next day, she closed down her computer and put on her coat. She left her suit jacket. She looked respectable enough with her blouse and slacks and did not want to feel the formality of a suite jacket. She grabbed her warm coat and shut off the lights. As she walked to the elevators it was nice to see everyone was gone at a decent hour. She was striving to organize things so her people could actually have a life outside of work.

Kylie enters the local pub O'Mally's and it was indeed starting to fill up with people. Happy hour tacos were being consumed by one and all. Most office workers and a few executives from the business blocks around it. Tom waved to her from a small table off to the side, under a picture of the Old Twin Towers. She took off her coat smiling, and he got up as she came over.

“Hey, you made it. Did you get everything you wanted to be done?” She nodded as he took her coat and hung it on a nearby hook. There were places all around O'Mally's to hang a coat or two, and it was very handy. She smiled at him glad to be able to relax with a colleague for a while.

“Thanks, it looks like a good thing you grabbed a table. I guess everyone is letting loose tonight.” He laughed. They both sat and were able to talk without yelling over their neighbors, barely.

“Man that Valentines day promotions were insane. I have to say I am glad that is behind us now. I swear it came close to a nervous breakdown for a lot of people. It was intense.” Tom commented. A waiter came over, and they gave their drink orders.
