I was working on my newest project when my phone rang the next day, and I answered a little hesitantly when I saw that it was Chloé. I could imagine what she wanted to talk to me about.

‘Hi,’ I answered. ‘How was the zoo?’

‘It was fine, Sammy didn’t care one bit, but it was nice to do something all three of us, other than just sitting around at home. How are you? I’ve been dying to talk to you about lunch, is she around right now, or can you talk?’

‘Grace? She is at work. Look, I know you didn’t appreciate her questions yesterday, but she was honestly trying to get to know you. I asked her about it after you left, and I promise that she didn’t mean anything bad by it.’

‘How can you say that? She was so clearly out of line!’ Chloé sounded outraged. ‘She said Lily isn’t a real parent! How do you think we would feel? And who asks questions about sperm donors to someone they only just met? That isn’t normal!’

‘She was trying to understand the process. I can’t blame her for being curious. I asked all of those questions of you too! She is allowed to have an opinion and ask questions, you know. At least she asked you something. You and Lily barely spoke to her once. You didn’t ask her a single question to get to know her better.’ I didn’t particularly appreciate confronting Chloé like this, but I did feel like I had to stand up for Grace.

‘Why would we ask her anything after that?’ Chloé took a deep breath and tried to sound more relaxed. ‘I don’t understand why you’re defending her right now; you were also put off by her yesterday. And what was that weird thing about her telling you what you can eat? She has some strange hold over you.’

‘I said something about wanting to eat healthier, and she ran with it. I have to tell her to calm down about that. But she was trying to be helpful. She is just sometimes a little awkward, socially.’

‘That is putting it mildly!’ Chloé said. ‘I worry about you, that’s all. Grace is odd, and now she is suddenly living with you. And she isn’t just a flatmate. She is acting as if she is your best friend.’

‘She actually said that I’m her best friend,’ I said. ‘She has no friends, doesn’t talk to her family, and now she and Dev are broken up, so she doesn’t have anyone but me. I agree that she is kind of clingy, and it’s crazy that she calls me her best friend! But she is so lonely, and I feel sad for her. She isn’t all bad, you know. And despite her little moods, I still prefer having her live here and some stranger.’

‘I’m not surprised she doesn’t have any other friend.’

‘Chloé! That’s a horrible thing to say!’

‘Maybe, but I stand by it.’ Chloé sighed. ‘But I guess she is better than some stranger who turns out to be a creep.
