Chapter 6
Dance Lessons
…
We decided to meet up three nights a week after my shift, give or take last minute appearances she would need to make. My apartment would be fine for practice. There would be plenty of room once I threw out my couch. She didn't need to know I was gonna do that. If she asked what happened to it I could just say I put it in storage or something.
“This is so amazing!” Rose said holding my hands and jumping up and down. Then she settled down a bit, “But this is a really big time commitment for you… Can I pay you or something?”
“No, no. That would be weird. I’m not a professional dance instructor. I’m your…friend. Just helping you out, like friends do.”
“There’s got to be something I can do…”
“You can promise me you’ll keep this one hundred percent secret.”
“Done. But why??”
“It’s bad enough being the super model cop without being the dancing cop too.”
“The super model cop? Oh…because of our names: Rose Ryan and Ryan Rose. Oh my gosh. Is that why you gave me the cold shoulder when I dropped by to give you back your hoodie?”
Ugh, I really didn’t want to go over what a jerk I’d been. I nodded and turned away. Really, she deserved an apology but I was still too crushingly mad at myself for screwing up. Just thinking about it was already starting to make my face heat up again.
Rose put her hand gently on my shoulder, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to embarrass you at work.”
That did it. She shouldn’t be apologizing to me! I whipped around. “No! I was totally a jerk. I…I wanted lunch with you and I messed up and made you feel bad and—“
“It’s okay. Really.”
I could have kissed her then. Partially in relief but also there was that electricity in the air; a sudden silence where our breathing seemed to match. Motes of sunlight drifted lazily past her soft skin, drawing my eyes to her lips. Will she, won’t she? Does she, doesn’t she? That’s what stopped me. The morning had already been too intense. Everything was happening at break-neck pace and I felt caught flat-footed…so vulnerable. If I brushed my lips across hers right now and she stepped back in surprise, saying there must have been a misunderstanding? My heart couldn’t take it. So, I behaved like the mature adult I am. I looked over her shoulder and accused the cat of being up to no good. The moment shattered away as I dodged past Rose and chased Pudding off the couch. He glared at me as if to say ‘you owe me’ and then scampered away into the bedroom. Extra dinner for you, mi amigo.
The next few weeks were perfect. Yes, it kinda turned my life upside down, but it turns out my old life wasn’t all that interesting. All that organization and efficiency that I prized made a lot of room in the day; room that fit Rose just perfectly. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed dancing too.
