There are many things you cannot say to my mother, but the worst is to tell her that you think she is odd or bizarre, or anything that implies that you might recognize her insanity. She is very protective of herself. She must have enough rationality left to be very afraid of someone noticing she’s not “right”. You can say she’s eccentric, eccentric is almost a compliment, but you can’t go beyond that.

I am sitting at my mother’s kitchen table listening to her tell how she mislaid her eyeglasses and spent the day looking for them. She tells it in great detail, tells every place she looked and what she thought as she looked, and every interruption she had. I am trapped. There is nothing I can do but listen as she drones on and on.
