“Detective?” More than a little surprised to see Evan Ramirez again so soon, Elenore sat up on her hospital bed and hugged her knees to her chest. “What are you doing here?”

Evan sent her a soft smile. “Just wanted to check on you and see how you’re holding up.”

Elenore thought about her session with Doctor Ingram earlier that day but decided not to mention it to Evan. He would think her crazy. “The doctor says I’m getting better,” she hedged.

“That’s wonderful.” Evan gestured toward a chair sitting next to her bed. “May I?”

“Yes.”

He took a seat. “You look good, Elenore. Most of your bruising is gone, and you have a nice color back in your face.”

Elenore wasn’t sure how to react to the comment. No one had ever complimented her before. “Have you seen my father?”

Evan shook his head. “No one has, as far as I know. But we do need to find him. I was hoping you could help me with that.”

“But I told you, Detective. I have no idea where he is.”

“I know you did. But I thought that since you’ve had some time to rest and heal, maybe you’d recall something that might lead us to his whereabouts.”

Elenore smoothed out the blanket covering her knees. “The last thing I remember was Daddy coming out of his room, holding his suitcase. He told me he was leaving town for a few days, and then he took all the cash from the cigar box on the mantle above the fireplace when he left.”

“And he didn’t say anything at all about where he was going?”

She shook her head.

Evan leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest. “Are you familiar with a woman named Alice Hastings?”

An image of a dark-haired woman with ruby-red lips appeared in Elenore’s mind. “She was one of Daddy’s friends.”

Evan’s arms slowly uncrossed. “So you knew her?”

“I only saw her a few times. She didn’t come around a lot. But she used to stay the night with Daddy sometimes.”

Elenore noticed the detective’s eyes light up with interest. “So, they were in a relationship?”

A strong sensation of disgust overcame Elenore with the vision that question evoked.

She remembered Alice sitting on her father’s lap in the corner of her bedroom, watching as Bill did unimaginable things to her. “If you want to call it that.”

“Do you know where Alice is now?” Evan questioned, sitting forward in his chair.

Elenore shook her head, unable to remove the images of Alice and her father from her mind.

They had done things in that chair, despicable things while watching Bill hurt Elenore.

Meeting the detective’s gaze, Elenore whispered, “I’d like to sleep now.”
