CHAPTER 14
AFTER THE PLANE LANDED, we took a taxi away from the airport and soon pulled up to the grand waterfront entrance of The Breakers, one of the most prominent resorts in all of Florida. It once housed the Kennedys’ and many other important celebrities and famed guests.
As we exited the taxi and walked through the lobby, Gwen sucked in a breath. Gold statues graced the halls and one-of-a-kind artwork lined the walls.
Gwen held back, staring at all the beauty surrounding us, as I stepped up to the front desk. “Hi, I made a reservation earlier this evening from the airport. Under the name Atlas,” I said to the agent.
“Ah, yes.” He clicked on his computer and studied his screen. “Sir, there is a message for you.”
“A message for me?” No one knew I was there, but I smiled like I wasn’t fazed by the fact that I had a message.
“It’s from a Spencer. Here you are, sir. Here are you room keys, as well. If you’d like, we can have a bellhop show you to your room and take your luggage up.”
He handed me a folded note, and I stuck it in my pocket as I stared back to him.
“No luggage, my friend. We’ll be over there.” I pointed to a corner of the lobby then walked back over to Gwen, who smiled at me.
“This place is beautiful,” she said, stepping closer to me. I wrapped one arm around her and led her over to the corner of the lobby.
“Yeah.” I had been very quiet since we left the airport. She raised her eyebrow as her eyes met mine.
“Is everything okay? You’ve been so quiet,” she asked, leaning her head against the wall. I glanced around the lobby and noticed how empty the place was. It was the middle of the night, and, although the place wasn’t bustling to life, there were a few employees scattered around. A young gentleman walked up to us, interrupting my thoughts about what had happened on the plane—Gwen calling out “Matthew” in her sleep.
“This way Mr. Atlas, sir,” the attendant said.
“It’s only Atlas. Thank you.” We followed him, the only sound the clicking of Gwen’s high heels against the tiled lobby. I held her hand, and my fingers twitched from the contact. My mind was scrambled with thoughts of everything coming to fruition. I was angry, and yet I was also feeling an expansion in my heart into which Gwen had finagled her way.
We made it to the elevators, and my body was rigid from the tension of the stress of everything. As we waited for one to reach the lobby, Gwen dropped my hand.
I glanced to her, and she stared at me, trying to study my stern expression. She shook her head as the lift pinged. The three of us stepped inside, and the bellhop pushed the button to the nineteenth floor. We rode up in silence, and a small smile emerged when I remembered the last time Gwen and I had been in an elevator.
