Chapter Eighteen

18

NSA Headquarters

Fort Meade, Maryland

As James Murphy left the office and started walking towards the parking lot, he could tell that there was something huge going on with Project Scorpius. Again.

Everyone was outside smoking, even the guys who didn’t normally smoke. And they weren’t being as careful as they normally were.

“This is like that episode of The Sopranos,” one of the guys was saying, expertly flicking his cigarette butt.

“Right, right, right,” his friend nodded. “Where they’re in the Pine Barrens, and they’ve got the Russian guy who just won’t die! I love that episode.”

“Exactly,” another man chimed in. “And then Christopher and Paulie get lost in the woods. Love the part with the ketchup. This is nuts. Crazy mountain-climbing ninja bitch.”

One of the men recognized Murphy from the Hawaii trip. He was a strapping, beefy type. Murphy couldn’t remember the guy’s name, but seemed to recall that he had been in the service before he came to the agency. Navy SEAL or something like that.

“Yo! Is that you, Murphy?” the big man called out.

“What’s up, big guy?” Murphy called out, making his way over to the group. As much as he hated to admit it, the strange Hawaii trip had only served to further stoke his fascination with Group Z.

“What’s goin’ on, guys?”

“Shit’s going down!” one of them replied. “Bet Fogarty’s people try to pull you into this project now.”

“Oh, really? What do you guys got goin’?”

“They’re trying to find this woman. I can’t…we’re really not supposed to talk about it.” The man took a quick glance around, seeming satisfied that no one important was in earshot. “Sky Burke.”

“The chick who climbed Everest?” Murphy had watched all of the specials about the expedition.

He had a passing interest in mountain climbing. And Sky Burke was easy on the eyes.

“Yeah, man,” the guy replied, nodding emphatically. “Fogarty says she hijacked a jet, one of the jets that’s part of Project Scorpius.”

“One of the jets?!” Murphy said.

The stories from Group Z and Project Scorpius were getting stranger and stranger. First there’d been just the one jet involved in this thing—now there were more?

Murphy was visibly intrigued by the story. But the beefy, gossipy man didn’t seem concerned with confidentiality. Not in the slightest. He was new to the agency, not particularly accustomed to dealing with issues of security clearance.

“Yeah, dude! No one’s really gotten the full rundown of what this project with the jet was. But it must’ve been big. Anyway, Fogarty’s putting out a story that Sky Burke was a suicide hijacker, but apparently she’s still alive. On the run. No one really knows more about it, except whatever she did messed up the entire project. Well, Fogarty’s inner circle creeps know the details, but they’re not talking, of course.”

Murphy nodded. “Thanks for letting me know. I’ll make sure I check my phone tonight.”

As he walked towards the parking lot, his head reeled with the implications of what the beefy guy had told him. The whole situation was perplexing. Where was the
