The line rang for the third time. Van Der Meld was getting impatient. Lucy came in with a tray. “GET OUT…” he screamed.

Fourth time lucky, the line answered. “Hello?”

“You fucking lunatic, Jongy, get your fucking arse back to headquarters, and bring the kaffir with you, I’ve just had British Intelligence barge into the High Commission because of you.”

“But sir?” Jongy said.

“There’s no ‘but sir,’ you have compromised the mission, get your arse out of there and back to headquarters, pronto, eh.”

“Jawohl Mein Herr, Heil…”

“Not on the fucking phone, Jongy, you fucking idiot.”

The line went dead.

Van Der Meld looked out of the window, sucking at the back of his hand. A childhood habit when he was thinking. He wasn’t there the previous day but after a conversation with Mr Blunt, he wished he had been. He could see the link the Intelligence Service were making, and making assumptions. He needed a better source of advice.

He opened his desk drawer directly under the table. A long thin drawer was hidden from sight. There was an array of mobiles, a picture of Hitler and Donald Trump and a swastika armband. He pulled a phone out.

Once powered up, he hit the only number in the phone.

“This better be good?” The American accent said.

“We have a problem, sir.”

“I’m staring right at your problem, put that idiot on a leash, I’ll decide what to do with him after I’ve spoken to the chairman.

The line went dead. A cold sweat bobbled across his forehead, things were getting a little hot for his liking.
