Chapter Five
âHoly fucking shit. You what?â Nicole screeched, and she nearly toppled over her iced latte.
Juliette sipped at the half-melted chocolate mocha concoction in her clear plastic cup. Again, she ran down the weird turn of events that had led to her meeting with Falcon. First, the blog post comment and the random emails, then the instant messages, the MMS pictures, the inkling desire, her sex-deprived life, until her haphazard date with Falcon at the Dupont dive. Theyâd had a few drinks and then ended up at his place. Juliette was sure to include her discovery of Falconâs Playboys and the notes heâd scribbled across nearly every page. âHeâs an artist, and he likes nerdy girls who teach communication,â Juliette explained, still not sure if she even believed it herself. Nicole visibly didnât.
âSee, thatâs the problem with meeting people online,â Nicole whispered, placing her arms atop the table and leaning across the wooden square toward Juliette. âYou never know if theyâre crazy or not, what theyâre thinking. Sure, plenty of people want some great NSA sex, but whatâs the risk, you know?â
Juliette used her tongue to poke at the sharp opening of the straw that protruded from the sweating, frozen drink on the table in front of her. That was certainly true. Juliette knew all about taking risks and meeting weirdos, ârandosâ, on the Internet. Now, she was just trying to figure out whether she was a victim of being hyperpersonalâcreating a knight in shining armour based on Falconâs pictures and IMsâor whether she was a victim of the poor medium, meaning that sheâd taken advantage of her near-anonymous status online to get her rocks off. After all, it had been almost seven months. Any sex wouldâve been welcome, random and virtual or not.
She had deserved lighthearted sex, the kind that Nicole bragged to her about, undoubtedly the kind that Nicole would have helped her find if she hadnât already exchanged electronic flirtations with Falcon. Her bad boy had to be bad, in the strictest sense of the word, not simply bad for her. There was a subtle difference, and Juliette recognised the merit of one and the agonising irony of the other.
Juliette sighed. Somehow, sheâd thought that meeting people on the Internet was the least awkward option available. Falcon had certainly thought so. And the sex had been amazing, there was no doubt of that.
Yet, there was still some kind of stigma that surrounded virtual sex, of meeting sex partners virtually. Juliette felt it herself, if only deep in her gut, and she certainly saw it in Nicoleâs eyes, in her rapt gaze as she waited for Juliette to share more of the erotic story.
She still didnât know what to think about Falconâs drawings, about his fixation with the Internet, with technology. She sucked at her straw again, harder this time. He couldnât be that fixated on technology, she consoled herself. Not with his body, and his grip on hers. He likely lifted and played sports. Baseball, maybe.
Perhaps he
